| Post subject: | Front indicator lens colour? |
Just wondering what is the correct lens colour for a 1966 mini deluxe? I currently have clear and need to replace one of them, but the new lens purchased does not mach the old one (slightly different shape & glass pattern) If they should be amber, I will replace them both with the correct type. The car is white, so the clear actually look better. Thanks. Dave. |

Australian cars are all clear glass front blinkers, because the front parkers are in the same lamp. You can get amber plastic lenses, but these should only be used with UK headlamps (Wipac Quadoptic, etc) that have the parker bulb in the headlamp. Reason- it is illegal to show other than white lights at the front. (I got pinged in my youth for having pretty dayglo green parker/blinker lenses..  )

Clear should be the correct colour. Amber on English cars I think. |

As said - clear for Australian cars. As mentioned by the Doc I have a set of Wipac Quadoptic with the built in parker so I rearranged the wiring to use the built in parker light and added orange LED lights to the blinkers - they look clear but flash orange. Helps with those people that don't think white flashing lights mean you are turning

I guess i was lucky to get away with amber lenses in the 90's. I went amber because i thought all the other drongos on the road might pay better attention to them on roundabouts and other turney manouvers. |

Thanks. Dave. If you are hunting for a pair of clear glass ones you will find they vary slightly even though marked with the same part no. The mould used probably changed over the years. It's the sort of difference that you might not notice unless pointed out to you. I had an odd set and one day was chatting to an Austin Healy owner who also had an odd set. We swapped and both ended up with matching sets. 
Keep an eye out at swap meets ect. Lots of BMC/English cars used those lights. |

Not Many people know that on early Minis the front parker lights work when the parkers only are switched on and they switch off once the headlight are turned on leaving only the headlights and tail lights switched on. That is all is needed. This was a way of conserving power on Generator fitted cars. It was actually a common thing on many older cars with generators. If you use amber lenses in the front when driving with your headlights on you will be fine using the indicators as they will flash amber. Who needs park lights in the front when you have headlights on ? Driving with just parkers on is illegal any way. |

Tony there is nothing in the Australian road rules about not using parkers only when driving. Volvos have them on all the time for example. On most cars the parkers stay on with the headlights. The rules prohibit the use of fog lights (whatever colour) in conditions other than reduced visibility and they also prohibit the use of high beam in proximity to other vehicles. RURR09.pdf This is the Queensland legislation but the rules have been common since 1995 with minor variations in each state. I am surprised at the number of vehicles getting around with low mounted spot lights on all the time, be they driving lights or fog lights etc. These lights are far brighter than parkers and irritating to other drivers, particularly at night. These are illegal and you can be fined for them. Just ask my painter. |
