I was at the auto paint place today getting my quotes (for paint) etc.. When I was stumped as to what is the best thing to put on the floor pan and underbody :?

The guy, while very nice, was talking about various products (stone guard for wheel arches etc..) but wanted to get ausmini members expertise before I paid out any moola for products :wink:

What is the best thing for heat and noise, etc.. to put on the floor?? Or underbody? Any other members out there with 2pac paint - did you paint your underbody? Is it worth it?

Any input appreciated :wink:

On my last resto (non-mini), I just 2packed the underbody (in fact the whole shell), and put spray-on sound deadener on the inner arches - this was effectively replicating what that car had from the factory. :D

The quotes were for paint, etch primer (etc) only.

I'm having the car sprayed on the side privately..

On the 850 I used 2 pack tar epoxy ($40/L from the boat shop). Think Araldite with bitumen in it. It's tuff stuff. 8)

If it's of any help fruity, my car is 2 packed, and has spray on tar under the entire car, and on the inner roof. Anyway, I'm looking for sound deadening foam to put in as well, as the car is still a bit loud for me.

well first of what he said is not wrong and in fact correct, its a method often used to surface the underside of a car and wheel arches, if using this method its very original looking and best to continue along the sills below the edge strip, this is Rover Finished quality, very smart and easy to clean

Other methods are as what member's have said, but some will work out more costly, I would say stick with the paint chap

By the way whos the shop and whos painting it for you??????

DO NOT buy Motorspray 'Stone Guard'...unless you want a very poor finish.

I am talking form experience! and their sales reps don't give a sh!t about their product either (also from experience)

I second that, but the body deadener spray is OK.

Harley, do you have anything sprayed on the floor?

Guys, if I stone gaurd underneath should I be putting something on the floor aswell? Or not necessary?

Anton - poor as in doesnt look too pretty or as in doesnt stay on for more than 5 minutes and wont withstand any rubbing? Because I wanted to use their deadener in the doors and on the rear seat panel - so visualy I dont care but I do want a tough durable finish.

The Motorspray 'Stone Guard' product (from the tin, not pressure pack) is a water based product. The manufacturer (Hi Chem I believe) state that it is compatible with ANY acrylic paint.

YEA RIGHT! :evil:

The stone guard went on really well, and gave an excellent texture - exactly what I wanted. I followed all instructions to a 'T' and ensured that EVERY product I used was compatible - as per their instructions.

After 3 months, the gloss finish coat, applied over every area that I had applied Motorspray Stone Guard, had 'cracked' and 'crazed'. The reaction was NOT immediate, and took 3 months to come through the top coat.

I spoke with one of their sales reps, who got Hi Chem's NSW Sales Manager to call me and have a chat.

He said that because it is a water based product, it does have 'issues'. He promised to come and have a look at my car with one of their lab technicians.....but of course that was just B.S....because he never got back in touch with me.

The sills were done in a pressure pack can, of a European brand 'stone guard' product. This was bought from elsewhere, and I have had no problems with that product.

Moral of the story is - Don't use a 'certain companies' water based product. It is pure cr@p.

I am off to the Hunter Holden paint shop (great guys who know their paints) to try and find a product that will isolate the problem areas, then I can reapply a much better stone guard product.

You live and learn......that's all I can say. :)

Do I remember something about POR17 or something that someone was painting thier subframes with and reckoned it was tough as :?:

I don't reckon there is any need to paint the inside of the floors with sound deadening/ protective coatings if that's what you mean fruity just underfelt under carpet.

Thanks fuzzy wuzzy :wink: I wanted to be able to lift up the carpet so I can keep an eye on things (rust etc) I will leave it then..
