I have these two motor's, both 950 morris minor motors. But nobody can tell me whats with the one with the BIG KNOB above the oil filter housing.
Can anybody tell the history of this engine? Please!

I don't know what the reason was but I have seen it before.
I think probably early from when they first added the full flow oil filter. (The first 803cc A series motors had a by-pass oil filter)

I wonder if they cast them like that to keep their options open for a while if they wanted to change position?

If no luck on here you could try one of the Australian Morris Minor online resources:

http://www.ozmorris.com/

http://www.morrisdownunder.com/index.htm

http://www.morrisminornsw.org.au/

P.S. The casting around where the engine number is stamped appears a bit different too.

My 1958 original engine (number starts with 9M...) has the same lump. An earlier casting (Number starts with AP...) 1955 ish doesn't. So I don't think it's a throwback to the 803cc unit.

I don't know what it's for though...

I have been searching the net and all I can see is a mention of the Sprite having a different mounting for the filter to sit 1" higher...

G'day Graham.... long time :)

I have put your post up onto morrisdownunder and will see what transpires. We have quite a few 'old codgers' on there who will more than likely know.

1) breakaway forum - nothing useful there

2) lots :) been going over 8 years http://www.morrisdownunder.com/index.htm

*edit ... it's not an early austin sprite block is it?

Iv`e always thought them to be for a different oil filter arrangement for the industrial/stationary/donkey engines,,, i `ve never seen a road car application of it tho, always just been the blank casting like yours,,, & as usual/always the castings seem to over-lap

edit--> i`m going to see dad tomorow so i`ll ask him,,, if anyone knows , he would... but then he`s forgotten more than what we all know :-)

Hi Graeme [been a long time)
Yes there are, but they are no different to the other block beside it.

Look at the draught tube on the top one. No curve or move upwards just to even try and return oil vapour to the sump, just straight down.
When it starts to blow oil it just drops out and straight down.
Oily road.
Go downhill and empty the sump.
New rings every 30000?
