As the title of my post indicates (bad pun, sorry), I have trouble with the indicators on my 67 S. The left turn signal gave up the ghost suddenly. It was working, then stopped. Now, I get half a flash occasionally, but not every time. Right turn works fine.

It is the stalk type with the flashing light on the end. I pulled it out yesterday and dismantled it, cleaned all the 'paste' and residue away from the contacts, reset the little copper contactor that slides over the copper contacts. All seems to be fine visually. Tested the continuity between the contacts and the wires on the back, all ok.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You could check that the indicator's have a good earth at front and rear.
Cheers Rob

Change to a nice new electronic flasher unit and you'll probably find that your problems will be cured.

If your parker's are dim on left hand side check earth or if not try the checking the connections where the indicator's join the loom.
Old wiring builds up oxidisation/corrosion at joins.
A quick check costs nothing.
Rob.

The flasher can wiring is the same for the right and left indicator, so this isolates the flasher can from the problem.

I can't solve it like this, but at least you can leave the flasher can out of the equation.

The contacts can indeed give trouble, as can the wiring from the contact to the bullet connectors or plug under the dash. The wires move around a lot as the arm moves and can fracture inside the insulate without looking broken. Another spot to check is the bullet connector on top of the speedo under the bonnet, check to see it is still connected and sweet. This bullet supplies the indicator to the front and rear and is another potential bottleneck.

If both front and rear bulbs are out all at once, then it is unlikely to be the bulbs or fittings at fault. Also the front and rear earths are common for right and left lights, so it won't be that if the other indicator side is working fine.

So I would check the contacts again using a multimeter to test for continuity at all times, and the bullet connectors and plugs.

Thanks for your help guys. Finally got around to investigating last night, corroded bullett terminals on the front indicator housing was the culprit. I guess I assumed it was the stalk because of the sudden failure.

Cheers
