This Mk1 S head came with a car I recently purchased. To me, it seems as if three of the water jackets have been welded up.

What do you guys think? Why would someone do that? The 1275 block that came with it appears stock...

Any thoughts?

Yes that looks standard
What head number is it?

It is a Mk1 S head, no it's not standard- the combustion chambers are enlarged a bit for starters. Can't see the ports but I bet they are bigger too.
On all 1275s, the 2 end water holes have a brass plug (with 6mm hole) pressed in.
These 2 end plugs often come loose- I fix these by tapping to 3/8 BSP and screwing in a Loctited brass plug, then decking the head and plugs.
Welding the holes like this is a bit drastic on a cast iron head IMO and there should be 6mm holes in there for water flow too.

[edit] not sure on a Mk1 S head, but on all other 1275 heads there should be a hole where that middle plug is.

Should look something like this- note my pic (12G1316 head) is upside down to pic above. The deched head at the back has had these 2 brass plugs replaced like I said above.
