Post subject:  Electronic Ignition Help

Hi guys,

I received a electonic ignition kit from ebay today and i fitted it with little troubles, however when trying to start my car again i dont get any spark at the plugs.

The car was running before changing however not to well so i decided to change to the electronic kit. Im only reading 1.1 volts to the coil with ignition on and only 0.7 volts when cranking, also when checking the resistance of the coil my multimeter doesnt move from 1 no matter what i do.
Is there anything else i can check before buying a new coil?

Cheers for the help.

i`m figuring that`s your problem

you should have 12.5v to your coil with ign on & about 10 or 11 volts while cranking

Ok il head down to supercheap and pickup a new bosch coil, hopefully that should fix the problem

If you're getting low voltage to the coil, a new coil won't fix that.....

^^^^ Zackery what i was getting at

but wondering if he`s got his multi-meter set up with the dot in the wrong place , so the reading would be pretty right ???

Just checked again, 1.1 volts on the 20v scale, might redo the wiring, will that cause the voltage to drop?

Only if it is broken.

The 12 volts comes from the ignition switch, check for voltage at the other end of the wire before buying anything else.

I'm dubious however, it was running before the electronic ignition was installed, and now it isn't. I would look more closely at the area you were working. Check to see if there is a joiner in the wire near the coil or close to the front of the car. Be sure to test for 12 volts not across the coil, but from +ve to ground on the chassis.

The only wire i cut was the earth wire coming from my old points which i connected with the new earth wire. I undid all old wiring and still only getting 1 volt at the coil end, how do i check it near the ignition? Thanks for the help

That old earth wire isn't actually an earth. It switches between ground on the chassis and open circuit. It's a bad spot to check for 12 volts for this reason.

Does the ignition light come on when you turn the ignition on?
This proves the ignition switch is working.

If not, and the starter solenoid works fine, then check the white wire between the ignition switch and the coil. After that, check the fuses (ignition is meant to be unfused, but people regularly switch wires around).

Turns out my multimeter was faulty, was reading the same volts even when testing the battery.

To make matters worse i tried to put the points back on but still dosent want to start, the timing must be way off because i fiddled with the dizzy without marking its original position   still doesnt start when i try rotating it though.

Edit: tried to time the car using the multimeter just so i can get it started for now and there are no timing marks on my flywheel at all, just a pencil mark which i assume is the correct position. who can i get to fix this without costing a arm and a leg, considering it shouldve been a hour job which would only cost $50.

You will need to static time your distributor. You can use the timing marks on the flywheel through the clutch housing inspection hole and a mirror to see that the flywheel is just before TDC on No. 1 cylinder. Use a test light between the coil and the distributor on the low tension lead to set the timing at first.

How far do you usually have to push the car to find the markings? I pushed it up and down my garage and the only mark i could find was a texta looking mark.

After i find this do i just switch the ignition on, take the middle lead from the dissy and hook a multimeter to it, then turn the dissy until i read 12 or so volts.

Yea a box of beer for anyone that can help make it run again :P

I got a new multimeter to check the coil, its reading 4.4 on the 200 scale on the positive and negative and 9.00 on the 20k value from the middle to the positive. Also getting 12.3 volts to the coil itself.

Also found the markings on the flywheel, when the point is on the 1/4 mark the dissy is pointing to the number 1 lead.

ok if no one has come around to help this is what i do take out number one plug (plug closest to the radiator) and get the piston at top dead centre grab a (clean screwdriver and make sure the piston is right at the top ) now put car into 4th and take hand brake off and look into flywheel cover hole with a light and u should c markings on flywheel put it on 1/4 i think the mark is and then put hand brake on and turn ignition on and turn distributor with cap off untill the points spark put cap back on and take out of gear and start it that should be at tdc grab a timing light put it onto number 1 lead which is onto the plug u put back in and turn distibutor untill u get it at your desired settings :)
