Post subject:  steering column lower sections
ok, i`m looking at getting the little piece of the bottom of the steering columns made

you know the little broached/splined piece that is welded onto the bottom of the column with the pinch bolt through it yeah?

if you`re keen on one then let me know please because at the moment it`s looking like i need to order a min of 500x of the damn things to get the right price, so no mucking around here :-)

& don`t get me wrong here boys & girls, i`ll be outlaying a big bundle of money & i`ll be wanting some solid interest (after i get the first sample back with a price) so please don`t stuff me around... either you want one (or 2) or you don`t.

so give me an idea on numbers here & i can get a pile of guys on the other side of the planet too & i`ll add it all up in the next month or so before my man leaves China for the trip home

So is this to replace the striped splines on the steering column?
Just cut off the old striped one and weld one of these onto the column.

Matt, I hope you are getting these made from a decent grade steel, not the usual Chinese cheese... :lol:
I got a price to make some here recently for Mini King, they are cheap and easy to machine from bar stock on a CNC lathe. The problem was cutting the 9/16 SAE spline inside, as nobody here had a suitable pull broach.
We were going to wire cut them instead, but it adds to the cost. :cry:
In the end we decided it wasn't worth it due to lack of demand.

Anyone know what the legalities are for welding steering components?
I am sure there is something about it.

I know they came welded from the factory but they had engineering and quality controls. They were not just blown together by old mate with his stick welder in the backyard.

i believe you need to be a "certified" welder... & it had to be Tig-ed

& yes to everyone, to replace the stripped lower splined section & yes it`s similar to the minisport one, & yes Doc, damn good quality but not quite as hard as the pinions

hope to have them quite a bit cheaper than the last batch we had got made here in Aust

Hey Kev,

Did you consider making a broach while you were looking at wire cutting and/or EDM??? Then you only need to pay for the machine time once and you have your tool that you can use for broaching the rest with?

Just a suggestion

Re the welding onto the shaft, the shaft is splined into the coupling. All the welding does is stop the shaft pulling out.
The couplings were not TIG welded on, they look to be stick welds. Nothing wrong with that at all on these thicker components.

MIG was not real common back in the 60s- I remember when I got transferred to Rheem's water heater plant in 1974, they had only 1 general purpose MIG welder. And that had been out of action for years.. :lol:

Hahaha, nice try :) I'm back at work on wednesday I can find out if you really want?

I have done it before where we needed a strange or one of broach (the last one was for a Gunsmith, he called it a draw button or something like that for rifling barrels... it was a broach I don't care what he called it :lol:) and we made one out of HSS on the EDM. There are plenty of other engineering shops around Sydney with EDM's, just take them a drawing of what you're after and they should be able to do it :)

ok sorry, i`ll re-phrase--> These days the authorities want them to be certified welded via Tig

:-)

but hey,,, who knows what method of welding, or even if it`s been (after-marketly) welded/repaired before anyways???,,, it`s only if they`ve been found to be the cause (or part therof) of an accident causing personal injury , is if/when the problem would possibly arise
