Post subject:  Info on 1071 racecar wanted.

Hi all,

I have found a 1963 Fiesta Yellow/white roof with powder blue silver brocade interior car that was apparently one of three cars specially imported for racing in Australia in or around 1963. The car is still in original racing form with many period special tuning parts. There is also reference to "Team Rosette"? Does anyone know much about this?

I am in the process of purchasing this car and was wondering whether anyone would have any information on 1071's early racing in Australia that may have included this car. Does anyone know of the drivers etc....?

Sorry the seller will not let me share the photos, as this car has been in storage for 30 odd years and the sale is confidential.

Any assistance is very much appreciated!

There is one in Melbourne and one in Adelaide , that is of course relevant to the last known location in 2008

On delivery the RH tank, oil cooler and sump guard were options

The 1071 delivered to Melbourne in May 1964 had a dealer charge of 4 pounds 15 0 for a set of 4 1/2 S rims and 23 pounds for a RH tank

( this information is from Mk1 performance - ADO50 )

I don,t but the fellow on the Forum would know , I,ll see if I can get in touch with him again

On a side note

" Bob Holden needed a car to race in the 1100cc class and he got hold of a dirty red 1071 in Sydney , with the help of Lynx Engineering the engine was bored to 1098 , balanced , ported head, 13:1 compression , straight cut gearbox , limited slip diff . On its first race at Warwick Farm it broke the lap record , it was timed at 126.76mph down Conrod at the Easter Bathurst Race "

Hi Monaco, not sure if this helps but I'm sure I can track down more info on it from either dad or the previous owner. We have a 1963 1071 Cooper 's' in the same colours as yours. The car is an ex race car and was brought over from england and raced in Australia at some stage. We have had the car in storage for over 10 years and god knows how long the owner before us had it for. The 1071 donk is still with the car albeit in 1000 pieces. Body is very straight and believe it or not no rust! I think dad might have the original logbook with the car somewhere so I will see what I can do. I am not willing to put photos of it on here but if you are genuine then pm your email adress and I will see what I can do.
Cheers, Steve

Yeah I believe this was discussed before. A bit of BS. IE what did the worked lightweight broadspeed GT do down conrod?

I think that most of Tuckey's stuff can be taken as slightly less than correct.
But on this occasion it seems he is right. According to the John Medley Bathurst book...
A fastest lap of 2.57.2 and a speed through the trap of 126mph setting a class record.
The Broadspeed driven by Laurie Stewart was timed at well over 130mph (If it was timed why didn't they give a real figure?)

There was also a driver called Lynn Brown (male) who drove a mini sports sedan (circa 1972 -73 ???) at the now defunct easter meeting at Bathurst and who was credited with being the fastest mini ever and I am sure that his speed was slightly less than 130 mph.

His was the real deal - space frame rear, big wide 13" from wheels and a big cross flow head wwith webers sticking out the front.

Ted Brewster may be someone to talk about for more info on this car.

He ran a 1071 for years in the mid sixties. He still runs in Historic Touring cars.

I think the "delivered" 1071 referred to above may be te Earl Davey Milne car that is extremely low mileage and Australian delivered. It was seen at Coopers at Como a few years ago.

It is Tartan Red/ Black roof with Red English interior. Apparently you had to have a valid race license to order a 1071 new in Australia so the story goes.

I would be interested to hear more about these early cars.

My (smoke grey/OEW) car was Oz delivered on 11Oct63 - presumably dispatch date - based on other info from the Heritage Cert.

Allegedly it was imported by BMC and "given" to a local rally hotshot but its physical state suggests a rather benign life...

I guess its all out there somewhere...

Cheers, Ian

A few facts about the Lynn Brown Mini.

10" wheels
1410cc cast iron 5 port head
single Weber carburettor
lightened and braced standard front & rear subframe.

A well sorted car.
Special performance aid. Lynn Brown - driver.

clocked at Bathurst 142mph in qualifying. 137mph in the race.
like the Broadspeed, speed not recognised. Deemed by stewards to have gained a slipstream advantage. The car pulling Lynn down the straight, good mate Peter Brock in a V8 LC torana GTR (V8 XU1 mule car, running as a sports sedan)

 Thanks John

My memory fades with age. I got some of the facts right but the big wheels and the forward facing webers must have been on another car (or six).

The speed is faster than I remember, however - again its age.
