All of a sudden our speedo needle has statred jumping around, odometer still reads fine but needle goes mad??? I have oiled the speedo cable it moves ok and the fitting that fits into the back of the speedo seems fine ?? Any ideas?

Mine does this too, sometimes it will get stuck, other times it will just go all over the place

And squeak like a mad man, worst part is, the squeak gets faster and louder with revs..

1. If needle is just moving up and down a bit probably the cable has a slight kink in 1 spot.

If it's flicking around the dial and back I'd say either the speedo head is worn out (needle drum touching the magnet), or else you have got oil inside the speedo head.
It is good practice to leave the top 4-6" of the cable dry to avoid this, when you lube it.

Adam, re the squeaking, note that most new cables now are supplied dry and somtimes with free rust. Clean and lube before use.

With my minis, I've always found you can tell its a kinked cable if the bouncing only happens in a 20 km/h range somewhere on the speedo, eg mine does it between 40-60, but not faster and not slower.

If its bouncing at a higher speed, problem is more likely elsewhere.

I think i have got oil in the speedo by the sounds of dr minis suggestions,so how do i fix that?? Tsb

It can also be caused by a dry bushing inside the speedo head.
To much oil is bad, dried up 40 year old grease is also bad.

My advice is to send the speedo to an instrument repairer and get it cleaned and serviced.

Lubing a speedo cable is news to me. Please explain.

You pull the inner out and wipe it with molygrease- Castrol LM or LMM or equivalent. Leave the top bit dry as said above.

Once upon a time they had lube in when new, they seem to be supplied dry as a bone now.

My speedo used to do the same, bounce al over the place. I sort of had to take an average. LOL
I replaced the cable with a new cable and wallah, perfect.

What the good Dr said...or it can be just some iron particles have found their way into the mechanism...people do tend to leave their "precision" instruments lying open on benches with a lot of magnetised crap lying around
