Post subject: | Gearbox spares |
Have finally begun restoring my 1967 Morris Cooper S Mk 1, dormant since 1977! Have been collecting N.O.S parts as much as possible to rebuild the 3 speed synchro gearbox. Have viewed most of the popular sites for spares, some indicating that "competition layshafts " are available. Do these layshafts help to reduce the somewhat rapid wear ? Or are there other factors involved? Some forums I have read suggest that some of these layshafts are not hardened /heat treated correctly. Can someone suggested a possible source of high quality layshafts? I believe there are Australian made items. Should I use a Leyland N.O.S item in preference to one of recent manufacture? |

I've not rebuilt any 3 synchro boxes lately but on 4 synchro ones I use either Heritage MG's layshafts (all their shafts are made & heat treated in australia) or Karcraft's current ones (sourced from UK). Both have been hardness tested here, and were over 61 HRC. Not sure if karcraft got their 3 synchro shafts tested, I'd ring and ask. There is a lot of stuff on the web re bad layshafts from UK, but that was a year or two ago. |

I bought Competition Layshaft last year from a well known Mini spares company in the UK had a massive bend in it. It took a zillion emails back and forth and 8 months to get it replaced. |
