Post subject: | Sudden coil failure |
I've had 'tired' coils before, that needed replacing, however I've just experienced very sudden failure. Driving along, constant speed of 80kph, started missing for about 10 seconds then dead. Multimeter shows dead secondary winding. Coil is less than 6 months old, maybe a 1000 k's. Anyone had this? Just bought a dud, or something can cause it? Running 45D electronic dizzy. |

Couldn't tell you you the brand - some generic type one I bought when I was running a pulsar dizzy so 2 or 3 ohm on primary (I forget which) standard 'can' style coil. |

I always maintain that solid state devices ( and a coil is pretty "solid state") will either fail the first time it is turned on or the first time it is allowed to run "hot" ie an extended length of time. - after that it will last nearly indefinitely - only third party items will cause failure like a geko getting in the works. |

Well, I guess this is your first exception. Coil has had plenty of heat cycles, and went bang under very average conditions. Annoyed the hell outta me, first time in 20 odd years of driving the things that a mini has ever left me stranded on the side of the road. Seriously. |

Voltage regulator working OK - no sharp spikes coming off the alternator ? no shorts somewhere causing voltage fluctuations? but then a dry solder joint or bad crimp in the coil could have let go. |

Yeah anything's possible I guess. I'll dig through the parts bin and carry a spare for a while and see how it goes. |

I have seen 2 GT40-R coils fail when used in points systems with no ballast resistor. They got hot... then no worky properly. Gafmo's was one can't remember who had the other (maybe it was CD?). However, they do run fine with a Pulsar electronic dizzy, and stay cool. |

Ya but remember this was with an electronic dizzy. I had a poke in the cupboard, have found 4 old standard coils (not tested yet). I've emailed the guy I bought dizzy from to see what he says the resistance should be. |
