Post subject:  Replacing pot joints with motor in car

Hi All,

Just went to put a new drive shaft in the moke, and it doesnt fit in the old pot joint. It came with a new pot joint (that it obviously fits into).

Is it possible to take the old pot joint out with the motor in the car and put the new one iin?

Thanks
Chris

Yes it is but you need to drain the oilz first...
otherwise it'll drain via the sidecover when you pull the pot joint.
Change the seal in the cover whilst the pot joint is out.

thanks kev.

Do I just bang it out and bang the other one back in?

I read something about a 'c' clip in there somewhere that can get damaged?

If you have a wide cold chisel (a brickies chisel) then get that between the joint and the side cover, and knock the joint out.

Like the outer CVs, it should have a spring ring in a slot in the shaft which will compress and allow the shaft to slide out. It's possible to damage this if you're unlucky, but usually not.
