Afternoon all; We've been having problems with our GT gear stick. At times it fees like it's hopping out of the gate and it's impossible to feel any gears at all. Our manual suggests there should be a 'retainer' present but my father can't recall there ever being one there. Supposedly it fits in between the ball and the enlarged part of the gear stick shaft. Does anyone know if this part has an alternative name that might help us track one down? |

they may be talking about the plastic retaining ring i`ll sort a pic from the manual for you |

There shoud be a split plastic/nylon???? ring that goes between the gear stick ball section and the spring. This is held in place by the retaining plate which is bolted to the remote housing by 2 cheese head screws. Some remote assemblies have an additional inner rubber boot. This has an additional pressed metal "cap" that goes on top of the retaining plate along with the inner boot and an O ring that goes on the gear stick between the inner boot and the usual large outer boot. I'm not sure when the extra rubber boot was fitted but it was on a 70 build Mk2 S I had. I don't know if it carried through to the GT. RonR |

yeah it was a later addition to help stop road grit getting into the joint i don`t know when it came in either, maybe my dad will know |

It could be the knuckle joints (on top of the diff housing) have come loose or if its only 1st / 2nd or 3rd / 4th it could be a loose selector fork. |

We've tracked down a new plastic bush (19), but it seems to be one of the smaller ones - the one we pulled out of it is much taller than the one we've got. 
The part that's news to us is 17. And as of this afternoon, the gear stick is slightly improved. The stick is in the gate, but there's no feel for when the gear is actually selected or not. I might see if I can get hold of Minisport to sort out this brush issue. |

Item #17 was on late cars, early ones had a round flat plate, with another C shaped bit on top of that to support the screws. There were 2 different bottom bushes #19 but only the short one is available now I think. |

yeah ok, the bush you have to replace the old one is the newer type 22G389 (from memory),,, i don`t think you can get the old one anymore the #17 is the plate that holds the "other" rubber boot on (disscussed above) & it sounds more & more like GTmowog has it right & the knuckles are loose (above the diff-housing) if you look down behind the engine, between the carbies & the radiator (sort-of) you should see (with the aid of a torch) the 2x gear-change knuckles residing on top of the diff-housing have someone inside the car wobbling the stick while you look down behind the engine with your torch & you`ll see what we mean these "Knuckles" often come loose & you will have exactly what you`re describing as your gear-shifting issues OK??? |

GV27, The exploded view on the right is from an early remote used IIRC in things such as 997 Coopers etc. It was modified several times including the double spring to stop gear lever "sizzle" or rattle. I guess it eventually morphed into the later type as shown on the left. LH view is the one used on OZ built Mini Deluxe, Mini K, Cooper S, Clubman and GT etc. The plastic bush I meant is shown as #21 flange. #17 is the cap for the inner boot. IIRC Earlier remotes just had a flat plate. RonR |
