Post subject: | Steering rack U-Bolts. Tips? |
I removed the knackered rack from my Moke today and I have the new one sitting in place. I'm struggling to get the u-bolts to slot into the bodyshell. The Subframe mounts are all undone and the drivetrain and subby is sitting about 2" away from the body. Any suggestions to getting the u-bolts in without removing the subframe completely? Cheers, Brett. |

I had a real job of getting those back in just the other day. I tried levering the subframe this way and that, but i think the succesfull position was when i levered the subframe forward. I did this by levering in between the body of the car and the tower of the subframe. I believe that was when i had success of getting the u bolts in, but i was quite frustrated at the time so i may be remembering wrong. |

They tend to open up after tightening so the ends are spread when removed. Squeeze them a little in a vice and try them in the holes first, from inside the car- then they will go in pretty easy. ![]() |

I agree, did this last week and u bolts went in easy once they are "squeezed" to line up with the holes. I guess they came out so they must go back in, but you shouldn't have to drop the sub-frame out altogether. |
