Post subject:  Idler Bearing (Gearbox Case) Re-fitting
How far does the idler bearing need to be fitted into the gearbox case when using a 4 synchro idler gear? Does it go right up to the circlip on the inside of the case? When my gearbox was rebuilt it was set up for a shorter 3 synchro idler gear since a 4 synchro was not available (see photos). A longer 4 synchro idler gear is now going to be fitted. If it needs to be moved inwards what's the best way to do this? Is there another circlip groove on the outside currently under the bearing?

Any help much appreciated.

Yes it goes in level with that circlip groove in the pic.
Then you will find there is another one on the outside.
Put clips in both after fitting the bearing.
I pull them in with 2 sockets, a bit of 1/2" threaded rod and a couple of nuts.

The idea of the wider bearing spacing is to give more stability to the gear.

I did this a few days ago, and it can sometimes be a little hard. I used the two-socket method that the Doc suggested, until I stripped the bolt!

Make sure the hole is very clean. I gave mine a quick once-over with a piece of wet and dry paper just to be sure there wasn't any markings from when I removed it (this was after stripping the bolt and taking it back out again). I had to use another bolt, and I would use a mallet to bash it in a little, then tighten it back up, bash it in, tighten it up...

It probably shouldn't be that hard, but it worked.

One thing to watch is that the inside of the case isn't real flat. Sometimes need to pack the socket on the low side so it will push straight.

when my gearbox got rebuilt they pressed this bearing level with the gearbox casing havent had any dramas yet

Thanks for the replies. All done now. I bought a 4.5" x 0.5" bolt from the hardware store and used a couple of 19mm sockets. Didn't need a great deal of force and seems to be lined up well now.

Anyone know where I can get a new circlip for the outside? I can't seem to see them listed with any of the local online stores.

They are a standard circlip. Worth peanuts from a bearing shop.
Measure the bearing bore in the case (is 1-1/16" I think) that determines the circlip dimensions.
