Post subject:  Converting a panelvan to a traveller
Hi everyone,

Was just curious if anyone has ever modified an aus panelvan into a quasi traveller? Ie. Fitted a rear seat?

As a former panelvan owner, I'd love another one day.... A rear seat would come in handy with a couple of kids in the house!

Obviously it would require engineer certification just curious if many have gone down the road!

Yes, it has to be engineered of course particularly with the seat belt mounts , now just to throw something in the mix , here in Melbourne there is a Traveller which according to the owner is a English import 2nd owner which was ordered from the factory with the seats facing backwards and mounted just behind the front seats and the bottom of the seat folds up and can be clipped secure so you still have load space , ingenious

To me two points stand out would be that if you did the same apart from the obvious would be replacing the battery with an Optima or similar and having it properly secured( lead acid battery near 4 people ? ) and having extra engineered mounting points for baby and child seats

Travellers still have load space with their normal seat arrangement. With the seats folded down, they only lose out a tiny bit compared to a van.

Fitting rear belts wouldn't be easy. UK estates were never fitted with rear seatbelts, they finished production before they became mandatory in the UK. The only estate to have a rear seatbelt was the Australian prototype.

There were aftermarket rear seat conversions available for vans, and it would be possible to have one fitted now, but pretty expensive.

My first car (1974) was a 68 minivan with a rear seat , conversion was probably organized though the dealer as the previous owner was Sutherland hostpital.
