Hey guys, Just doing the wiring for my starter motor, and have run into a couple of questions. I have transferred all the BROWN (power) wires to the large terminal that is shared with the '+' feed from the battery. Then the trigger (White/Red trace) wire is connected to the lower most terminal. (standard size, compared with the top one which is a lot wider) When I hit the key, all I am getting is the solenoid clicking, but no turning. I have bench tested the starter motor, and found that it is indeed only clicking I get when I power this terminal, but touched the power feed onto the other terminal and got the motor to turn. I was then able to trigger the solenoid to trigger and the motor to spin, only once I bridged these two terminals with a wire (it was actually a spade drill bit; I cheated!) So this leads me to believe that maybe there is meant to be some form of connecting wire between these two? Is anyone familiar with these? Does anyone have a pic of how it is meant to be? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers! |

Thanks for the reply Beanie. So it looks like, by the sounds of one of the posts on that forum, that the two larger terminals (with threaded posts) are indeed meant to be connected? Maybe the link wire between mine doesn't have a good connection. Or maybe there isn't even one there? I can't check now because the power is out in the area and I can't be buggered working in there with a torch! |

My car doesn't have the smaller (lower) spade terminal connected to anything, so a link may not be needed if you just connect to the other spade terminal. |

Are both of your threaded terminals connected? |

Big threaded one from battery also connects to alternator and fuse box, the smaller threaded one isn't connected to anything external of the starter unit (theres a wire between the solenoid and motor, but that's it). When I remove the motor from the car, I undo the large battery terminal nut, remove the spade connector for the start circuit, and that's it. |

Yeah awesome, sounds like theres definitely a missing link between the motor and the solenoid. I'll have a suss of it all once the power is restored in the neighbourhood. |

Just to confirm for you: the two threaded posts on the solenoid are NOT connected to each other. This would make the motor run permanently. Think of the solenoid as a big relay. The wire coming out of the motor is only about two inches long, if its cut or missing that's a problem, as the motor end of it is difficult to access to replace it. |

This is how I have it: ![]() And with it like this, the only thing that would happen when I turned the key is that the solenoid would click. If I bridged the large spade terminal and the other threaded terminal, I was able to make the solenoid click and the motor turn. |

Ok so i probably haven't read all you have said properly, but i'll try to explain the setup simply. You need your battery cable to go onto the outside post on the solenoid. You need a wire onto the small terminal on the solenoid to be wired to the ignition, so that it gets power when the key is turned to cranking. So you turn the key, the little wire gets power, which makes the solenoid operate, which connects the battery cable to the starter motor. (edit): whilst i say small terminal, i'm not familiar with this starter motor, but 1 of the terminals should go to in between the 2 posts, and will actuate the solenoid when given 12V Now testing the starter motor, from what i read i think you did it wrong. Put power to the outer post and connect an earth cable to the body of the starter. Nothing should happen. Then get a wire and join the power to the small terminal inbetween the 2 posts. This should make the starter operate. If doing that only clicks, but bridging the 2 posts makes the starter go, then you have a problem with the solenoid. |
