Post subject:  Flywheel threads stripped?

Hello,

I went to remove my flywheel this evening, but none of the three holes in the flywheel for the puller bolts have threads. I can see what looks like the remnants of some threads in the holes, so I assume they have indeed been stripped (rather than there being some other threaded holes behind the flywheel that the bolts are meant to screw into, or something like that - please correct me if this is actually the case!). Any suggestions as to what I should do about this?

Cheers,
Harry

If it is a 2 piece flywheel, you are looking at the holes in the flywheel hub.
The threads are in the flywheel itself, behind the hub.
You need longer bolts maybe. :)
Threads are 3/8 UNF, put a bit of oil on the bolt threads.

Here's a picture (sorry about the lack of focus)..

I can see right through the circled holes to what I assume is the clutch plate (something solid without any holes in it, at least), and there's no thread anywhere in the holes. Am I missing something?

yep... there should be threads in those holes

bugger!

gentle(ish) taps through the starter motor hole with a piece of wood - tap tap tap, turn the flywheel, tap tap tap, turn, etc. etc.

Get a 7/16 UNF tap, cut new threads, use 7/16" bolts.
Tapping drill size is 25/64" but if stripped now it's at least 3/8" (24/64) so is pretty close.

And if it comes off and you intend to re use it get it Balanced or throw it away!

If you need another flywheel I would have one you can have - you just have to come and get it - halfway between Wellington and Gulgong.

I had one like that. A good mate welded a nut on there and we got it off with the puller that that way. It went to scrap metal afterwards.

If you are welding nuts on there, DON'T use it afterwards.. cast iron does not like being arc welded.. :!: it will be an accident waiting to happen.

Yes, we threw it in the scrap metal bin. :)

Yeah Brett I figured you did, my comment was to warn others why.
Cast iron ain't that strong- here an over-lightened iron backplate that let go.
OK it was turbo powered...

Bugger.. I knew it was all going too smoothly! Thanks for the suggestions for getting it off - I'll try some of them on the weekend.

Thanks for the offer Mike, but I think I'll struggle to find the time to drive up there and pick it up.

Cheers,
Harry

I did an inventory check yesterday - I have at least eight two piece flywheels. If you know someone going past near here let me know and we can work out something in terms of a pickup.
