Hey,
Having changed my engine oil the other day (put in 20w-50) and a full tank of
BP ultimate plus valve saver stuff, The engine since tries to stall when the clutch is in.
The car is staill as drivable as ever, but I have to keep adjusting the choke for between 1100 and 2000 RPM. My dad was playing with the carb today, he was complaining of the same problem when he took it for a drive today.
Now, is my choice in oil and petrol possibly the cause of my idling problem, or does the carb just need a fiddle due to the fact today has ben cooler than the weeks avarage?
Any help would be great,
Thanks.

what is your idle set at?..i'm assuming it stalls in neutral with the clutch out as well.

Possibly just the cooler weather, what is the idle set at? was it idling high before or just wont hold the same idle?

You probably don't want it to idle much below 1,000rpm...

It used to idle comfortably on 1100. The same as the best I've had it.
After sitting on 2-3000 for a while, it just wants to die in neutral with the clutch in on a downchange longer than so many seconds.
The point is If the choke is set and the engines idling away happy, after a trip to 3000 and back to idle, it wants to stall. I pull the choke out to catch it again, then set it, and it repeats.

Generally 10w 40 is a bit easier to run in the cold. I'm running 20w 50 at the moment and it struggles untill it warms up. Is it only when the engine temp is cold? Check idle screw and carbs again if you haven't already. :)

I would advise not using 10W-40 oil. That's designed for modern cars were the oil doesn't need to feed the engine AND gearbox. It's too thin.

Can't see how that oil (20W/50) can affect it. But, I once tried 40W/70 and couldn't get ANY gears from standstill- the primary gear wouldn't let go of the crank!

Cant see the oil would the problem I also agree 10/40 is to low and you should use 20/50
I'd check your fuel Filter :!:

Having just got back from a 10 minute drive, I think most of the problem lies with all the linkages on the carb. I was able to set the idle at 1100 with the choke, then drive for a short while, and it would go back to 800. I can feel the choke cable moving around a little, so tomorrow I'll adjust the idle, choke, accelerator etc linkages, screws and springs so they always go back to the same spot, as opposed to going roughly where it came from.
The other thing is a noticable power increase when the car hits 2500 revs, so I think it is struggling to get high amounts of fuel at low revs, with the foot down under acceleration.

Anyone know any sites where I can have a crash course in basic carb adjustments?

I haven't got a fuel filter!
I bought one, but don't know where to put it yet.
The only space with enough room is 100mm from the exhaust manifold.

Do you have an Eletronic Fuel Pump...usualy on the rear subframe
If you do not have a Fuel filter put it between the tank and Fuel Pump..this will stop crap going into the Fuel Pump

Yes, I have an electric fuel pump.
Wouldn't the filter be better after ther pump? For example, if it is blocked, it
would be better for the pump to try and move fuel as opposed to not get any?

From the tank where most or the crap will come from into the filter and throught the pump....Other wise the crap goes throught the Pump  and can block the pump and blow the pump
