Hi team, Two questions for the wise: I need to stop the rattle at idle that my car has in the drop gear case. I can work out how to adjust the primary gear end float but what about the idler gear that lives in there? How do you even measure the float let alone adjust it if it is wrong? Then, when I go to put the clutch cover back on I'd really like the car to last for a little while before it starts leaking oil. What's the secret formula for assembling engine to gearbox and end housings without ending up with leaks? Which is the best product to use? I have a full seal kit from Minispares. Thanks, M |

mine usually last at least few months before they start leaking - I use permatex #2 |

re the leaks, 1. Make sure all surfaces are flat, particularly around the screw or stud holes. Clean all gasket material off and wipe surface with thinners. 2. Fit new bronze bushes to the diff side covers and machine them to fit the U/J flanges or pot joints. Clearance .001"-.002". This stops the pot joints flopping about in the oil seals, a major leak point when the seals get a bit old. 3. I use Loctite 515 master gasket flange sealant. It seals better than the Permatex does. |

I use the Lotctite aviation gasket sealer. Have also used the Mercury (y'know the outboards) equivalent. Both of these are non-hardening sealants so they don't leave dangerous little dags of stuff to get sucked around your oil inlet mesh and block it like silicone can. I do use the Loctite orange RTV around the half moon seal though - being rubber, the aviation sealer doesn't seem to take as well there. After doing this, the only leak I had was the sump plug because the PO had helicoiled it non- square. The copper washer was never able to seal on the uneven surface. cheers michael |

Thanks all! I used the Permatex non hardening sealant last time and to be honest don't really know where the oil is coming from. M |
