ausmini :: View topic - Wiring auxiliary gauges

I have a VDO electric oil pressure gauge, and VDO temp gauge, fitted to my new custom dash.

The gauges have wires on the back (for the gauge and illumination), but I have NFI where to connect them to.

Is there a standard for these type of gauges, maybe a chart somewhere on the net.....or will it be guess work?

I would pray to whichever deity you usually pray to that the senders on the engine for the oil and water temperature are the correct calibration for the gauges you have.

SPEAKING OF WIRING AND MINI's....

I started to connect up my loom last night. :shock:

Holy Crapola! I was working through 2 different manuals (One was a haynes, one was a Gregory's) and their wiring diagrams are so wrong it's not funny. :evil:

In the end I got it sorted with the Black Leyland publication - A Mini enthusiasts bible IMHO.

All in all a ning nong of a job without the right diagram!

both these guages should be fairly easy to plumb. both the oil and temp sender on the clubbies ase aleady electrically plumbed to you guage binacle, so you will be able to take a split or redirect the path to the guages. Oil sender is on the left of the engine just near the dizzy, the water is on the right hand side of the head. I am guessing that you havn't got the senders in there or the loom. if the loom is in you should have them labled from when you took it out. can't remember the colour codes for them at the moment but i am sure some one will. Now on the guages you will have a light, power, earth and the actual units sender feed. having not seen or know what colours it has it's hard to say which is what. If you tell me what colours and how many wires it has i might be able to guess. Or you can give Olympic instruments a call and ask them. Or go see them on your way home. There on pacific hwy, left hand side. Just before pymble. There nice guys but are somewhat strange. Cheers Aaron

That's exactly the gauges I have. The gauges are used, with wires still attached (I removed them from another Mini), but the wires are all the same colour . They were wired very well, in a custom loom, but that just led to a plug - non BMC / Leyland. My loom is fitted, but I didn't mark any wires upon removal. I am relying on the manuals to trace wires. The loom is 100% original. So far it has been pretty easy to trace them. I hate cutting an original l oom, but I think these gauges are essential, rather than RICE....so I will have to do it.

Anton, Just check, i have the same gauges, a couple of them need the 10.5V and I think these are included. I think I still one one of the boxes which has the wiring diagrams at home. You will also need the sender for the oil pressure and they're about $150. The temp sender I can't remember if I changed it or used the existing one. KB

Yes, to buy a sender from Padstow pirates or similar will set you back $150 KB

I would pray to whichever deity you usually pray to that the senders on the engine for the oil and water temperature are the correct calibration for the gauges you have. If the prices you are getting are that bad I would probably sacrifice a goat before trying. We killed this goat for good luck last time we changed out the camshaft in situ.

That black book is useless for early Oz Mini wiring.. lifted straight from the Pommy book.. Might be right for Clubbies but I doubt it. If you don't believe me trace the reversing lights wiring.. Only correct one I've found for roundnose cars is Gregorys/Scientific Publications No 64.
