Post subject: | Under Bonnet Painting - Request for Advice |
Hi Guys, I am planning to repaint my bonnet and I am seeking advice as to the best paint to use on the underside for both noise reduction and of course safety. I have some bitumen based deadener but I am unsure whether this would be safe to use:?: |

I think regular paint is all you'd need, minus any clear maybe. Bitumen based stuff might not be the best Idea, It'll make the bonnet heavier and twist more on the offset support. Maybe look into a thin layer of sponge type material instead (made for under bonnet applications of course). |

I resprayed Pops bonnet, inside and out. I used PPG primer and colour. I can't see any benifit in putting anything else on there. You won't get any noise reduction (well maybe with some stick on felt type stuff you will). I used a wire brish to clean up the under side, as 35 years of use had left it pretty ordinary (plus it had NEVER been resprayed before, so it was very grotty) It's the best panel on the car now... ![]() |

Perhaps even some heat resistant paint.....might last a little longer than the normal stuff. Also black is probably best choice...black body radiation theory....let all the heat go to the bonnet.. *Disclaimer* this theory may be wrong...been 2 years since any physics courses for me |

I used enamel with a hardener in it, the paint shop guy recommended it as it'll provide the most uncorrodable surface when attacked by petrol and brake fluid - hasn't been tested yet... |
