these things never happen on a quiet sunny day, but why would my headlamp on the passenger side blow, tho still work on highbeam?

I've just been out there in the sodding rain trying to get the thing sussed but it has me beat

anyone got a simple answer as in the whole lamp is buggered?

there are two filaments in the light, it's normal for only one of them to fail

and yep, if it's not the type that has a globe inserted in the back, then the whole light is buggered. They're very cheap from supercrap etc.

just a standard 7" sealed beam light

Not sure about lights for a mini, but you can often get halogen replacements with removable globes for much the same price as the sealed beam lights. One of the headlights on my hilux died, and I bought a set of replacement halogens with globes on ebay for a little more than one sealed beam replacement. Heaps brighter, and if a bulb blows, I don't need to replace the whole thing.

sure can

http://www.minisport.com.au/prod983.htm

if you've got a roundy, make sure you get curved glass ones, flat ones are avail for clubby's and they should stick to clubby's... just look wrong in a roundy :)

You can also get halogen sealed beams. My mate has a pair in his Mini, they have `halogen' written in the glass.
 maybe that's just the brand...

But why would you want to? The old sealed beam lights in my hilux were halogen as well - I still replaced them, and the new ones were much brighter. Perhaps they had just aged.

You wouldn't, I agree.
No way I would prefer any sealed beam to a proper halogen lamp with an H4 bulb in it.
Most normal sealed beams have crap optics, a halogen sealed beam would be brighter (and more expensive) than these but still have crap light pattern.

[edit] I just posted because I thought it strange, I'd never seen a halogen sealed beam before.

I can you why but in the city (any city) you dont need much extra light, relatively speaking. On the other side of the sandstone curtain its different.

We have the mini's mortal enemy. Its called the kangaroo and they cunningly disguise themselves as scrubs and have a habit of leaping out three metres on front of you. The roads here are all 100 kmh roads.

The H4 headlamp assemblies allow you to choose a range of bulb wattages and currently I run 110/90 watt lamps as against the normal 50/70 watt (or what ever it is) and those extra lumens give you those extra seconds to see the disguised mini mortal enemy.

I had the misfortune of meeting a wallaby at 90km/h. Poor little thing left quite a dent on the front right of my clubby - however if I hit another wallaby with the front left you'd never know, it was a very nicely shaped dent.

If it hasn't already got them, dont forget relays for both high and low beam...
