start where the workshop manual says to start - 5 degrees? I used to find it was always "about right" if I advanced the distributor to where it idled the fastest, then go backwards a little bit to where it sounded nice. After that I'd go and drive up my usual test hill and listen for pinging. Eventually I got a timing light and discovered that I was just about spot on... |

I gave up setting timing static or at idle years ago. Most 1275s on 98 unleaded run best at around 30° total advance @ 4000 rpm and up. It's the middle of the ballpark. Works for my 1412 stroker. Some need slightly less, but my 1360 (282 cam and big head) needs 38° total because a PO bathtubbed the head. ![]() |
