circumstantial evidence suggests Volkswagen Beetle drivers from the 1960s behaved with often unwanted confidence in tight traffic situations, probably because of the car’s then-nimble handling and peppy acceleration. The Beetle’s rival, the tiny but nimble Morris 850, invited similar driving behaviour.

One of the problems with a Beetle back then was it was very tail happy and more times that not (especially in the wet) the driver would get the tail out, get scared and lift off the throttle. It was then sure to loop.

A driver back then called Ed Mulligan campaigned a roller bearinged two litre VW in the rally cross aty the old catalina circuit (and other circuts as well) with resonable success.

Another driver of the time, Barry Ferguson, still has his rally beetle and still gives it a run in historic and charity type rallies. Barry also was both a ford spnsored Cortina driver and has a cortina given to him at the time by Ford via Harry Firth and for a while was also a driver for the Holden dealer team.

A Press Release full of absolute rubbish just to get AAMI's name in the media.

"with one possibility suggesting" in the 2nd paragraph, being the words used to jusitfy the conclusion "to compensate for the limited size of their car" that is obviously a headline that the news media will love and put in the title. The AAMI copywriter was just smart enough to know this. What does this website do?, put it in the headline of course.

I hope they paid you a significant advertising fee, let's hope it is enough to cover the damage to your brand from printing this utter garbage!

Another reason small car drivers do annoy me, is when they pull in front of me and cant maintain their speed because they are underpowered. GET OUT OF MY WAY. If a small car driver cant maintain a large car, and has a bee in their little small car bonnet about it, catch the bus; if they can afford it, get over the fact that a large car is NOT that much more expensive or worse for the environment than a stressed small car, and get back in a large car.

I would describe a `60s Beetle's handling as scary, not `nimble' haha. On the F3 in a crosswind, they would change lanes.... I was a VW/Formula Vee mechanic in the late `60s.

Just tonight I was entering the highway following a SUV, they were going around 95kph at time of merging onto the 110kph highway so instead of sitting behind them doing 10 to 15 kph below the limit I jumped in the right hand lane and sped up to 110. By this stage I was far enough infront of them to merge back into the left lane when they turn their high beams on, I continued to merge and I wasn't to close to them they were just up set that a small car had come up behind them, passed them and moved on. I felt like hurling my club lock out the window at them but I guess that would just be "small car syndrome" Have you read the comments to the article, turns into an AAMI slanging match

Mike I think it was in the 'Wynns Safari' that I did in 1985 and Larry Perkins had a Beetle. At the major river crossing all the 'major' teams would stop and walk across and have a look at the depth etc. Larry would just charge in and sort of float across and keep going. Lead the event nearly all the way!

By and large, the standard of driving in this country is terrible, and the disturbingly common attitude appears to be that the safer a car is perceived to be for its occupants, the the lower the observance of safety to other road users is displayed by the driver.

ROO was cruising at 105 kmh. Put on the right turn signal and passed the lot. Asked the wifey to wave to the tractor driver as all I could see were his hub caps. Tour bus driver was right peed off and hauled out to pass and chase me down the tarmac...silly b...er.

Came up on a convoy trailing a road train in the Northern Territory - two utes towing caravans behind the train, followed by a tour bus and two cars. They were all doing 95 km/h. ROO was cruising at 105 kmh. Put on the right turn signal and passed the lot. Asked the wifey to wave to the tractor driver as all I could see were his hub caps.
