Post subject:  ..it's been a while, too long in fact!
Since installing a new engine into the car early last year before I took off to live in Thailand, my beloved mini has simply been locked up in Adelaide and hasn't moved an inch!

My uni studies have now taken me all the way over to Perth and while living without a vehicle is manageable and of course a sensible option for someone with a student income... but my dreams of cruising up and down the coast on the weekends in my mini with a huge grin on the face is a thought that I can't seem to get out of my mind.

I'm currently exploring options into getting the car over to Perth, but expect it may be an unaffordable option at this stage.

To help me with my decision, I'm interested to hear about your experiences with interstate car transport companies? / train? /other?

How far off road worth is the car? Could it be worth it getting it to a decent mechanic and getting it registered then driving it over to Perth?

It cost me around $750, give or take a few dollars to get mine from Perth to Melbourne with Toll/Autotrans, so it should cost less to get from Adelaide to Perth. Price varies depending on if the car is driveable (cheaper) and if you get delivered depot-to-depot, door-to-door or something in between. I got mine depot-to-door; PO dropped it off at the depot & I got it delivered to my work & drove it home from there. Depot-to-depot os chepaest, 'cos it removes extra cartage at either end.

It's in a drivable, road worthy state but the engine still needs to be 'run in' and given a proper tune up.

The drive to Perth certainly could be an option. I've heard petrol can really be quite expensive in the remote areas in-between though and, well it's a bloody long way!

Just called toll and they rkn $970 depo to depo. Anyone think I could do it cheaper?

Dont set off in a car thats not recently proven to be faithful. Even daily drivers have a habit of giving trounles and breakdowns on club runs and things.

Just get it delivered and then sort it out. Not many places stock mini uni joints in the middle of the nullabor

Ha ha. I reckon the 28 hour drive from Adelaide to Perth gives one plenty of time to do the actual maths on how expensive it is to drive a car across the Nullarbor....and you can repent taking the drive at your leisure...

A nice contrast of responses.

Although the drive sounds adventurously tempting, the sensible option surely is to be to get the car delivered.

But is there a way to do it cheaper than a grand?

Crossing the Eyre Highway and Nullabor is not a big deal...however we went south through Port Lincoln and not east across to Port Augusta, before going on to Adelaide. The only hills we crossed were east of Perth when we climbed up to head for Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

We saw a sign that warned westbound travellers that it would be 1,000 kms. before the next shop. Do NOT believe this sign...it's not true. We had no issues getting fuel but you could carry a little extra just in case.

I say break in the engine - 20 minutes at 2,000 rpm for the cam and lifters, change the oil then use the first few hundred kms. to seat the rings - up and down the throttle but not full throttle or any heavy loading in any one gear.
