Post subject:  Hesitant Mini, Carby problems I think

Every time I put my foot down in second, third or sometimes even fourth my Mini bogs down, shudders and takes it's time to get goin. Iv'e adjusted the timing and got her idling just right but she's still doing it. Iv'e played around with it heaps but I can't fix the problem! I think it might be a carby problem. Any help would be appreciated. Also It tends to stall sometimes after i have stopped and it is idling. Might have something to do with it running hot? I sped up the idling speed a bit and it stopped doing it for a while but it's just started again.

I'm guessing it's an SU, make sure it's got oil in the dashpot...

What have you got the idle set at? you generally don't want it much below 1,000rpm..

I would guess either your carby needs to be rebuilt, sounds like the needle isn't dropping correctly, or your running the wrong needle.

of course it could be something else...

Check your fuel filter, could be a bit of crap in there.

Fuel filter is a good one too, but whenever that's been the problem, i've only noticed it at high revs where it's starving the car of fuel..

While you at it, might as well check your leads, points, sparkplugs for good measure...

I had a similar problem with mine a while back, cutting out after running fine and at a good temperature. can't remember what was wrong but a carby rebuild solved the problem!

I have a 1 7/8" exhaust with extractors and a ram flow filter. I did top up the oil in the damper and it is set over 1000rpm idle. I'll check the fuel filter but from memory it looked fair clean.
What should I pay for a carby rebuild or should I just upgrade. I think iv'e got a 1 1/4" at the moment.

so did you leave a 1/4 of an inch from the top when you topped the dash pot up :?: (or whatever the book says)

I wouldn't bother rebuilding a 1.25..upgrade to a 1.5 if you want to keep things fairly stock, otherwise 1.75 or even a webber/dellorto would be the go...

If your competent, you could grab a workshop manual and a rebuild kit and have a go yourself i'm sure..

Sorry, don't know prices for the cost of a rebuild..

Another option may be to try some nulon throttle body/carby cleaner..good stuff..

carby rebuild is easy enuf. to do yourself but if you got problems - such as a sloppy/worn butterfly shaft, take it to the pros. Mine cost $113.55 Most of that was labour but what the hell, after they fitted an oversize butterfly shaft, it was fine.

Hi Snowie,

I had a similar problem a while back. I tried changing the mix, cleaning and oiling the carbie, replacing the fuel and air filter and eventually I replaced my single with a set of twins and the problem still prevailed. I then moved to the timing/ignition and replace my points plugs and leads and did the timing and the problem got a little better. I then tried someone elses dizzy and guess what the car ran like a dream 8). So now I have a re-built dizzy and I am as happy as larry.

The moral of the story is that it may be in the last place you expect it to be, so check everything carefully. (and keep you options open)

I reckon timing / plugs / points / leads <edit>(Oh and dizzy, but that's in with timing) should be the first thing that anyone checks it is pretty critical to the engine running properly and mostly these are cheap and easy to check and replace if nessicary.
(hey even fitting a pulsar dizzy is cheap and easy)

Getting all these things correct should be done before trying to tune the carby otherwise you will tune the carby to make the best use of a crappy spark or timing etc and still not get the best out of your engine.

my 2 cents
