Post subject:  Fuel Pump Problems with Bigger Cam

Hi,
Im am mechanicly retarded & need some advice.
I have had a lot done to my mini recently & its finally so close to being finished!!!! - pics in the below link:

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set= ... 3a1ce372aa

ive had a new 1310 motor with a bigger cam built & installed & drove it home today. When I got on the highway it started coffing & spluttering until it just stopped. I would have to leave it for a bit & then start it again & did this all the way home!

Its something with the fuel getting through on high revs! could this be the pump? & are they easy to install new ones? & where could I get a new one?

any advice / assistance would be great!

im in Williamstown, Melbourne!

Cheers,
Matt

Probably not enough information to be able to diagnose over the net at this stage, maybe neen a pile more info & checks & etc`s

However, a good place to start would be the fuel cap & the tank breathers,,, does it have a breathing type feul cap & if so is it blocked??? & also is there a feuel tank breather hose/pipe & is is blocked???

i ask this because it`s all good having a fuel pump (if it works) & yet if the tank is sealed up (Ie: not able to breath air back into the void where the fuel used to be because your engine is now using that fuel) then the tank may be creating a vacuum (or a low pressure area) ^& therfor can be trying to suck the fuel back to the tank

once they sit stationary for a while without the engine running they are ok again because the low-pressure has now equalised

just a guess tho

What carb and pump?

Could it be as simple as the wrong jetting if you've put a much bigger cam and motor in?

@themimiman!

Ahh ok right yeh what your saying makes sense...
it goes great when u first turn it on, but as soon as you start cruising on the HWY is when it chucks the shits & stops!

When you leave it for a couple of minutes its fine again until you get upto speed again - will try checking those breathers etc tomorrow!

@last post
Its a twin SU I think 1.25 I am getting a bigger one, but it was all tuned this morning when I picked it up by the guys! timing, jetting etc!

What theminiman said, pull the breather hose out of the floor and blow into it (whilst connected to top of tank).
If you can't blow thru, pull the hose off the tank and poke a drill into the tank nipple to clear it. It's a tiny hole, that can block up.
Otherwise, my bet is a clogged fuel filter...

Even simpler test to see if Matt's right - drive for a bit without the fuel cap on...

good idea!
was going to do that tonight but the permit has ran out!
I started it up today, once it warmed up it idled for about 30min with no problems at all, & before I started it I opened the fuel cap to see if any air rushed in & it didnt

I think my twin carbi's might be part of the problem at all? they are in need of an overhaul but not bothering due to getting a weber in about a month!

any other ways of testing for sure if its the fuel pump?

A Fuel Pump will only pump when it can otherwise it stops. I would be checking the Fuel filter before or after the pump but I can't see a pair of 1 1/4 running out of steam unless its the needle profile. Ill ask how long do you wait once she stops and you can restart. I also like Matts comments

@Gafmo
ok I will check the filter next!
Yesterday when I was driving it home I only had to stop running it for no more than a minute - 2 at the absolute max & it would be fine again! it would be fine until either real high revs or HWY cruising speed

Just had a thought today, dont no why I forgot this!
back when it had the old auto motor in it, just before I had it taken out I remember it doing the same thing! being fine & then not going - back then I thought it was the carbi & assumed it would go away when I put the new engine & carbs in!

now that I remember that happening it has to be fuel pump, filter, or blockage somewhere!

ran it around today with the fuel cap open & did the same thing & doesnt like real high revs at the moment

I think i saw this in Joe or Daves garage a few weeks ago when i went to pick up some parts? The engine bay looked great. i had this problem when i also picked up a motor from Joe, so i fitted an electric pump and it works great, and was dead easy to fit.

Yeh mate that would have been mine! They built the engine for me!
That's odd u had the same thing!
There's an electronic pump on mini sport uk so might buy it and try it out!
What did u do to install it?

YEh so I put in a new fuel pump today..... :-)
now the new motor is LOVING LIFE!!!
It was going awesome for ages!!!! took it around a few blocks & it was revving right out this time instead of having a carry on!

had it out the front idling for about 20minwhen I got back, then it started to cough & splutter again! & died!! Grrr!!!! maybe I didnt put the carbi back on properly? or there is another problem somewhere?

I cracked the shits at this point & packed up!

Good to hear :D

Did you stick with mech. or go electric?

There ain't much to fitting the electric ones, and if you do it properly they'll last forever.

Edit: oops didnt read the second half, that's not good to hear.
