hi guys,

I purchased a new mini which came with a smiths electric tachometer (RV1 1003/00 0-80 ) and I was told it was removed since the car has electronic ignition.

Whats the best way to wire in a tachometer without damaging the electrics?

I took mine to Howard Instruments and had the smiths tacho converted to electronic to suit the 123 ignition dizzy I put on. It is perfect now but prior to that the needle was all over the place. I will be putting the original dizzy back on later but the tacho will work fine with that too I am told.

Mine has pulsar electronic ignition. If its all over the place tomorrow i'll look up an instruments place near by.

Smiths RV1 is old design, needs mods to work with electronic ignition.
Howard instruments in Melbourne are good for this, but I'd rather go buy a new (later) one, they work OK, then ebay the old RV1.
I also have Pulsar ignition, but my tacho is a 9000rpm Veglia Borletti out of one of my Fiats. Works fine...8)

Would you recommend the smiths current model tachometer?

Danny , i would take the tacho to a specialist gauge repairer and ask them before you hook it up , ( if youré not sure ) as it doesn't take much to spike the tacho and you could possibly stuff it .

There are plenty of different models in these tacho's , as well as a few different ways to hook them up .

My mate `4myego' bought a new Smiths one, we plugged it in with the Pulsar dizzy and Bosch coil and it works fine. Looks good too in his Mk2S. 8)

Thanks, I will pass by and ask him if its salvageable.
I opened it up to see if there were any broken components and one of the ceramic disc capacitors has blown or just fallen apart.
this is the kind of condition its in.
