It came out of a late 1967, early 68 Morris 1100S.

It is a 1275cc engine. There are no bad ones.

It is (originally) a small journal crank from that engine number, the rods in it are same as Cooper S.

I thought all of the large journal ones were 12YDTaH, the 12YTaH engines came first, and were small journal, then changed to large after 105??

so this'd be a large journal motor

Nope the change point was 12YD/Ta/H10487-10488.
So it's a small J as as I said.

Well not if its still in the shed after twenty years given the rise of the value of the dollar at that time :P

But yes its a good reliable motor - and worth the investment. Depends entirely on its condition then and now though. No change out of a grand to recondition it though !!!

And the rest, if doing it properly.
By the time you buy all new valves, guides, springs, fit unleaded exhaust seats and deck the head flat you are past the $500 mark. And you've not even looked at the bottom end.

I am in agreement

Depends a little bit what you want out of it and how long you want it as well.

BUMP!!!

A little OT from the previous posts (but this fits just as well here as anywhere else).... I've been trawling around a little bit, and just curious about the different numbers for apparently very similar engines.

I'm inspired in this by the 1275s as much as anything (not the least 'cos I have one) - 12YTaH (Morris 1100S), vs 12H902 (1275 LS) vs whatever was in the Cooper S, as well as whatever else is out there. Basically, what are the differences that determine the different engines?
