Post subject:  Smiths Cooper S speedo wiring question
Hi guys,
I tried to post this last night but an error kept occuring but anyway...
I have this speedo brand new which i've had for a few years and have finally decided to put it in my mini.

It's the one you get in the centre clock binnacle but I don't have the side gauges yet so they will have to wait till I have the money.

this is what I have..

I also have the centre wiring kit that comes with it

So my questions are..

Can this work o.k without the side guages for the time being?

The orange lights, what are they for?

I don't have the side gauges yet so they will be installed at a later date when I got the cash will the clock work o.k?

Also what are the orange lights on the side for?

You would need the 3.44 speedo gears on the gearbox for the speedo to work , one of the orange lights is used for the oil filter warning light,the other one is not used .

So it won't work at all on my mini? It has a 1275 engine in it.

Can you get a custom speedo cable to rectify the problem?

It will work (if you use the early style speedo cable with the correct screw on end) but it probably won't read correctly. Its possible to get a speedo cable made with a special conversion gearbox built into it, but it will be pricey.

The fact that it doesn't read correctly may not matter, the old Smiths speedos aren't exactly precision instruments. The one in my Moke has the wrong ratio, so it over reads on the speedo. The odometer under reads though!

You'll also need to alter the wiring for all of the bulbs. I'm pretty certain that that's all taken care of by the circuit board in the two clock setup, but there are seperate bulb holders in the central speedo.

Yea with the conversion loom I got i'll check the cables colours with the old clock and new and hopefully they should all crimp together.

I found this website that does custom speedo cables so i'll send these an email

I'm certain Speedy cables can do whatever you want. They are next door to CAI who make the Smiths speedos. They both have connections back to the original Smiths.

I agree, my 200KMH Cooper S speedo reads spot on (to my GPS) from 50-110KMH with the 3.44 diff in and 165/70-10 A008s.
Even with a (wrong, but current) 3.647 diff it's not nearly as far out as my AUII Falcon is (that reads 10KMH high @ 110 actual). :shock:

So do you reckon that my speedo won't be out that much on my 1275cc engine? As I don't know what the gear ratio is.
