Post subject: | another weird thing on my Mini |
I've noticed for a while that when I put my foot on the brake each morning ready to roll down the driveway, the speedo's internal light semi lights up - thought nothing much of it to be honest til today when I was parking behind a car and noticed in the refelction of the other car's rear end that when I braked, my park/indicator lights also semi light up ! do I have some weird wiring issue here or is this common? cheers ![]() |

If your car is a 67? or later (2 screw rear lights) there is an alloy divider that sits between the orange and red bits of the 1 piece lens. If these are missing (they often fall out when lens removed) yes the indicators will light with the stop lights or rear parkers. As for the speedo light, are you sure it's not the ign/charge light (red) bulb holder come partly out? Check on back of speedo. With a generator like you have, this light can come on in an automatic, if idle speed is a bit low. |

The light in the dash comes on but only just. Make sure the wires to the alternator are coonected properly. If they are and everything seems to running fine I wouldn't worry about it. It's a common thing for clubmans to it. My gt does it a mates gt did it. It's something to to do with different voltages at either end of the bulb. |

Considering you noticed the front lights glowing as well when you braked i'd be checking the brake/tail lights. Like 850man said, check the earth connection, check the bulb holders aren't rusty or dirty, make sure the correct globes are fitted - i've seen 21w indicator globes fitted in 21x5w holes causing backfeeding. A rare possibility is a globe fault where filaments can break and cross, i saw that once in 13 years working on cars. |

Yes as others have suggested its worth just spending some time having a good look at all the light fittings connectors and wiring. Sounds like the brake light signal is feeding into the tail light circuit. That's why you are also seeing the instrument illumination come on. If you can get someone to hold their foot on the brake you could go round and fiddle with the wires and connections you might find where the fault is. |

Post subject: | And the most common fault that causes this is >>>&g |
Make sure yo don't have a single contact bulb fitted in the stop and tail light as this will do just that. If a Mini has this type of fault I would suggest get it checked as it is not a normal thing. " They don't all do it " It has to be a fault somewhere. Most times man made too so check over what you did yourself first. |

I'll check that out when I find out what a single contact bulb is - scuse my ignorance, but what's the difference? |

Your stop/tail bulbs should have two/twin filaments inside the bulbs glass and two contacts at the base of the globe. The rear blinker globe should be just a single globe and so a single contact at base Convertible mini is suggesting there may be a single contact globe into where a twin should go. Usually offset pins on a twin filament prevent this but they can still end up fitted in the wrong place. The single base on the single globe would bridge the two contacts at the base of the fitting. While the globes are out take a good look at the taillight fittings. They do end up pretty cruddy if it's years since a bulb has been changed. Sometimes jammed in with dirt. |
