my speedo hasnt really worked since i got the car because the cable was broken. well i fitted a new cable now and the speedo is like totally wrong i was doing 140km/h on my speedo and my dad was behind me and said i was doing 73km/h id say his is right as it is a vt commodore. help i dont know what to do the speedo is steady doesnt jump around its just wrong, i took it ou but what can i change to fix it 
any help would be good it is a 3 clock speedo in km and is a screw on cable |

Speedos are complex. It could be as simple as the needle has been put on in the wrong position, or as complex as the spring that returns teh speedo to ZERO is fooked. To be honest, I wouldn't waste the time trying to get it right, hit a wrecker up for one. I am sure Makka has a spare he will sell you. |

You might be able to try washing out the back of the speedo with petrol or some other solventy type stuff a common problem is that oil / grease comes up the speedo cable and into the speedo and the back of the speedo works of friction so oil and guck in there makes it gum up so it reads high. I had one do this but so far I haven't got it working properly again after washing / rinsing it out 6 -8 times speedo tends to slow to rise and slow to fall if this is the case 
Otherwise do as JAM said cos it is not worth getting them recalibrated at an instrument place cause it will cost you many times what a 2nd hand one is worth (well at least where I checked it out) |

naaa its perfectly clean looks brand new but id doesnt work new looks as if it is a magnet in a alluminium dish thing , i think it is the spring as somtimes it stays at like 20 when im stopped |

If it stays at 20 when you are stopped its probably just the needle in the wrong place as somebody suggested...the spindle is often splined so do not twist the needle to get it off... I'd be real careful washing out with anything....the things need to be carefully cleaned with say cotton buds and alcohol (hic!...JB?? nah) Other parts need to be stripped and re-greased... |

How do you stop the needle thingy from flactuating? I can never tell if Im doing 100 or 120 cause it never fooking stays still

well i moved the needle and its reading right now but it jumps from like 50-60 it wont stay still |

Mine never stays still regardless of whether im doing 50-60 or 100-110! I just want it to tell me whether Im doing 100 or 90, not both! Is that too much to ask of Beefa?

this can be caused by crap (iron fillings) getting in between the rotating magnet and the aluminium drag cup...or the needle is not in the correct postion for that speedo (meaning you may have the wrong speedo for your gearbox) |

well i cleaned the iron filling but all i know is that i have 10'' wheels and a remote box i think it is around 3200rpm at 80km/h in top gear and the back of the speedo says 8?? rpm per km |

The cable either not running free because it is slightly kinked or if the inner is starting to break and bind on the outer is another cause of fluctuating speedos. If the speedo is not original to the car or the diff ratio has changed this will give the wrong readings. |
