You need small hands and nimble fingers What else do you want to know? And they are easy to fit when the engine is out. ![]() Hint #1, easier to reach the screw onto the gearbox when the car is on a hoist |

JC. Dam awkward to reach. If it's tight you will have prob's. First you need to make as much room as possible. Drop the bottom hose, remove the two engine stays. and tilt the engine forward as much as possible. Then comes the tight reach down to the round collar to undo it. If it's too tight, your second option is to undo the 7/16 bolt and locking tab and try and pull it up. I couldn't reach mine from underneath. Also. when I put the other one on, make sure the threads clean and oiled. and you don't cross-thread it. Alex. |

I struggled for an hour doing mine until I bought a pair of 6” vice grips. ![]() As soon as I got them on the gearbox end and loosened it off I got it all finished in 15 minutes. Didn’t loosen or remove anything. It was on a Moke and I have girls hand though. ![]() |

I've just bought a car and I reckon that is going to be the only real hurdle to getting a roadworthy. Thanks for the advices. JC |

my #1 tip is to forget about undoing the knurled nut - undo the 7/16 bolt holding the boss and take the boss out instead.... just clean it all up first or you risk getting gunk in the speedo drive |

JC, when you have it all worked out, please come around and do the cable in mine! It is also the thing keeping mine from roadworthy. (unless it is the speedo itself) M |

Honestly, I have done two and they aren't very hard. Squeeze your hand down the back undo it and put the new one in. Yes you need small hands, but surely you can find someone to help. Both times it only took me 10mins. With one of then, I sprayed some degreaser down there first to loosen up the build up of crud.. Then sprayed some wd40 to loosed the cable. |

I used to do my Clubman* by squeezing my arm down the back of the block... but I was skinner then... It broke if not unkinked properly and did quite frequently till I worked it out... and my big tip is..... Wait for the engine to cool down first !! More than once I thought - it's cool enough now...but once your arm is stuck down the back of the block/extractors it seems to get hotter and hotter !! Tip2 - don't leave old cable lying around - a magpie stole one of mine .... * 1972 Clubman (not leyland mini) ![]() |

Only tighten it by hand, makes it much easier to get off when you replace it the next time. |

A couple of tips I have seen on forums but not needed to try. A screwdriver through the driveshaft hole to unto the nut. Push a bit of poly pipe down over the cable to undo the nut. |
