From Issue 13 of The Mini Experience

2800 of the 997 Cooper (engine 9F/Sa/L) were built from September 1962 to March 1964, which is an average of around 156 per month.

Divide 156 into 2304 gives 14.8 months.

Assuming the average build was fairly consistent, and apparently it was, then the APPROXIMATE build date for car 2304 would AROUND Dec 1963 or Jan 1964.

Cheers,
Watto.

Shouldn't that be 1804 divided by 156 ,as they started at car number 501 ,so car 2304 would have been the 1804 th Cooper built . That gives a time of 11.55 months ,which makes it a mid September 1963 build date ............

EDIT : Using this formula my Cooper is a very early September 1963 build date ,which is about right, according to the dates on wiper motor and other parts .........

Shouldn't it be

2800 made over a period of 19 months equals 147 per month

2304/147 = 15.7 months, therefore Jan/Feb 1964
or
1803/147 = 12.3 months, therefore Aug/Sept 1963

Hmmmm 1804/147 = 12.27 this makes it an early October 1963 build date , and that makes mine a late September 1963 build :D

Oops, my bad.

Yes, I forgot to subtract the 500 and include September making 19 months

So, I guess you are right in that it would be around Aug/September 1963.

Cheers,
Watto.

Not sure if this is of any help or not, but maybe?
My first car was a 997cc Cooper it was about 2 year old when I bought it,
looking at some old paper work I still have it's engine number was
9FSAL/17015 and it was first registered on the 5/09/63, so not sure when the build date would of been but the above date was when it first got registered.
