Hi guys,
I decided to re bleed my brakes as they were a little bit spongy when i took it for a drive last week, I unscrew the right hand side brake bleed nipple half a turn and the thing just keeps turning. The thread on the nipple seems ok but the thread on the brake caliper has perished and i can move the nipple in and out without having to screw it.

What is the best way to fix this problem?
do i need to buy a whole new caliper set up?

they are 4 pot minispares calipers.

Take the caliper off and take it to a specialist brake place and see if they can put a larger bleed nipple in or put a thread recoil in for you.

I'm sure this came up recently. Probs just helicoil or tap a new thread for different nipple size.

Is it easy enough to tap in a new thread?

Only if you know what you are doing, have the equipment and tools.

In your case I'd take it to a brake place, as there are no 2nd prizes if you eff it up.
It's brakes mate, get it done right for safety...

I took the caliper off and had a look at the thread and thought it would be easier if they did it as the walls looked pretty thin.

It's not just a matter of a new thread- it has to be dead central with the port, or else put a ball bearing in between a new (shortened) nipple and the port.

My Minisport 4 pots have a steel insert in the alloy caliper which I assume helps prevent stripping the thread of the bleed nipple.

Ya the recent case was me.

I went to a 10mm thread to get enough bite.

As above if you don't get the new thread exactly right the tip of the bleeder won't centre in the hole and you get no seal.

I had to flatten off the bleeder and used a ball bearing. Seals perfectly, the only down side is because there's only just enough meat for the thread as soon as you crack the bleeder fluid comes out the thread as well as the bleed hole. Messy, but works. If/when I have cause to have the car off the road I'll get it redone properly.

A bit late now :(
I just picked it up from Sydney brake and clutch exchange.
$55 and 4 hours later.
They put an adaptor and a smaller nipple,
They did a pressure test and itseems to work well.
I am going to have the car off the road for another 4 weeks, if the other caliper plays up within that time I am goingto bring it back.

I hate posting from an iPhone.

That sounds serious Danny. Are you fixing the clutch adjustment?

haha i should of listened to you first time.
The other caliper has decided to play up too...
The nipple rounded off the second i put the spanner on it and the thread where the brake line goes into perished... I will take them both back tomorrow so i can get both threads fixed so it doesnt happen in the future..
