Post subject:  any common blueslip defects?

Hey guys, not too much to go now on my car basically sort out the wiring for the speedo cluster, got a shortage somewhere as my indicators and wipers don't work all of the sudden. Awaiting my new carpet to arrive from the Netherlands, get some new plugs and leads, awaiting ball joint kits to arrive so I can replace them hopefully they all arrrive next week. Then just little fiddly bits ie badges, rubbers etc etc etc.

Sooo in saying that I'm after any advice on what seems to get picked on the most when it comes to minis passing a blueslip?
I was wondering about my indicators as I have Orange lenses on them not the clear?
Cheers Pete

lenses should be fine, as long as the end result is an Orange flashing light, i think that's about all they look for.. and no cracks..

As these are also the front parkers they can get you. It's illegal to show other than white light at the front (blinkers excepted, they can be white or orange).
I got done once (in the 60s) for having nice dayglo green ones...
If you really want to keep the orange blinkers, you can fit UK H4 headlights (eg Wipacs) with the parker bulbs in em.

I'm just going through all this right now. It really depends on how standard your car is and how much of a clue the inspector has. I'll send you a PM when I get a chance with a more detailed run down of my experience.

Pedal Rubbers is something people often forget.

Just go to the 'right' guy and you wont have any problems

A blue slip inspection is supposed to be the same as a pink slip with the addition of the identity checks.
Make sure that the numbers on the car are clearly visible.

They need to read the engine number on the engine itself. So make it clean and easy to read. Make sure he copies it down correctly, if he gets it wrong it can really bite you later.

The car number on the body must also be clearly visible. Make sure they use the correct number from the correct location for that model.

If the car has a compliance plate make sure the car number on the plate matches the number on the body!

Obviously as others above have said but...

Make sure the car is clean - no rubbish on the floors, its washed and polished. The windscreen and other glass is clean inside and out and that the tyres are painted and appear looked after.

If it looks good and drives well apart from the mandatory checks then the inspector probably wont go looking for other faults.

If it ill prepared and grotty inside and out its almost a surety that the inspector will examine it for more faults.

Having said that it must be roadworthy in the first place.

Good advice from MikeB

Make sure the car is clean and presents well, you would be surprised how far this will get you.

Things I needed to do for roadworthy:

Wiper blade rubbers in good nick and wipers working

Windscreen washers operative (check the little plunger is OK and jets not blocked)

All lamps working (stop, tail, turn, park, head high, head dip)

Suspension rubbers and balljoints are another favourite they always used to check..

They seem to always:
Stand on the brake pedal and hold,
Take off rear drum brake,
Pull back dust boot on slave cylinder
Fail the car if there is the slightest hint of wetness, even if it comes from rubber grease used when re-assembling the slaves
Charge through the nose to 'fix' the issue before they'll pass the car...

So, I suggest looking inside the dust boots on the rear cylinders before taking it in. Maybe even photograph this area so you don't get stung for unnecessary work.

Or, they run a white rag over the shocks and fail the car if there is the faintest hit of oil on the rag. Even if the Subaru factory shop manual says to expect slight deposits of oil in this area... Yes, I've been down that rocky road.

The place I last went for a blueslip (1275 fitted to Barney) they checked the engine number then went away and did the form.
I told them it had discs on, but they couldn't be arsed to check.
