Post subject:  Wood grain dash help?
Hi all,
I have been slowly restoring a wood grain dash for my deluxe. All is going well but I do not have the two little pieces that mount to the door pillars and edge the large sides. I want to make them as to try and keep it looking original but would be guessing the size and functionality.

Can any body upload some pictures or details of these pieces? It would be greatly appreaciated.

NLJ000 Cooper S for sale shows them, I have noticed quite a few dashs installed don't have them put back in?

From memory they are pretty much what you can see, just finished nicely on two faces.
The thickness is not that important as the three pieces of the dash are adjustable to take up the difference.
I think they were attached to the body with self tapping screws first and then you fit the dash.
Behind the pillar side was scalloped out to give room for the interior light wires.

Are you applying new veneer to the dash? Or just refinishing what you have?

I pain stakingly chipped off the old lacquer without damaging the veneer, there were a few age chips that had to be filled with walnut putty. I am in the process of lacquering, smoothing, lacquering smoothing; taking quite a while but it is coming along nicely.

It will look original but not aged, but I'm not after the aged look, just original :D

I will try to get some timber to craft the side pieces, cheers.

They were just rectangular in shape, the height is the only important bit.

I have another question if anyone can please help. I have seen the centre part of the wood grain dash mounted different ways.

First way - Over the top of existing speedo mounting

Second way - New little brackets screwed to the back of the centre wood grain dash section with are right angles and attached the speedo to it. My centre piece has the evidence of the two screwed on angles.

What was the original installation and if angle brackets, was a blanking plate fastened to the firewall to seal hole?
