Post subject:  replacing the harmonic balancer bolt

as per subject i am about to replace the harmonic balancer bolt whilst the engine is in the car as the old one fell out and decided to sit on the pully and wear the threads off it

apart from using locktite on the new bolt is there an easy way to do it?? i.e. go in through the boot

and what shouldnt i do ?

i guess i have to take the radiator out

cheers

I tightened the bolt with the radiator in place, but I don't think there would be enough space to easily fit a whole new bolt in. If you can get the bolt in place, you can use a big shifting spanner.

Considering the amount of torque that has to be on that bolt, I personally would pull the radiator out, remove the engine mounting bracket and do the bolt up with a socket (1 5/16"). I can't see how'd you get in there with a spanner and get it done up tight enough.

Pull the rad and the starter out.
Use an old bearing shell to lock the ring gear.
Torque the new bolt to 75lb/ft, with Loctite 262 or similar.
Bin the lock washer, they are useless..
