Post subject:  Alternate Steering Column
Has anyone here ever switched over a standard steering column for a modern adjustable one mounted in the dash? Something from a late model small car that is pretty compact? It would need some uni joints to work I expect.

I am tall and do the knee knocking thing when I get in..

aparently different models had diff length columns... someone with knowledge will be along soon enough.

I too am tall and have moved my seats rearwards, and lowered my column, though now where I sit the column could be a tad longer...

Perhaps a diff length column would help¿?

Ideally, a column which allows the steering wheel to be pointing perpendicular to the floor - i.e. no rake on the dish of the wheel. But, that'll need a uni joint on the column itself I suspect.

Does your car have one of those little accessory drop bracket things fitted? If it does then might be worth trying without it first.

Hey phillb, thanks for the thought but no...... Still the original Leyland column etc in mine complete with rust 8)

Post subject:  Adjustable steering angle.
When I was fitting my "different" steering column I could have done it with angle adjust lever too as that is how it was in the Donor car, but I found that altering the wheel angle blocks the speedo and gauges from view which I did not like.

Thanks Tony. I saw your build.. it looks good. I am not after power steer though. When you were looking were there many units that would fit or did you have to modify the unit to fit?
