Post subject:  Who should I get to build my motor?
Motor is current in Sydney. Apparently its an S motor/box/head.

I'm wavering between supercharging it or not. Either way I'm keen on the specialist components fuel injection.

What should be checked/replaced?

All gaskets
New clutch
New rod bolts?
New main bearings?
Pistons and rings?
Rebore (only if necessary)?
Crankshaft grind (only if necessary)?
Appropriate camshaft
If the gearbox works, should I touch it? I have a spare one if it pops at any stage.


I'm not hard on cars but I want it to last. is it worth getting the head touched up while its off?

What should I budget for the following:

Machining
Assembly

Any help would be great. I would ask Matt to do it but he's got slot on.[/u][/code]

Greig Malaure at Mini Classic is probably your best bet if you want to do it in Sydney.

Yes Greg is a good assembler but he even he sends his machine work to and works closely wih Graham Russell.

With all engine work you pay for what you get and you get what you pay for, so you really need to discuss with either or both of these on exactly what you want and what you are prepared to spend.

Engines are machined and assembled quite differently for different purposes, however, between the two of them you have the best and most experienced currently available in NSW.

Anyone got any does or donts? I've only ever rebuilt bikes motors. Most mechanical thing I've done is head gasket on a starlet. The rest of the engine stuff I've ever done I would consider 'bolt ons'.

I would rebore it and fit new O/S pistons as a matter of course. Re-ring jobs don't work well in a Mini, by the time the rings are worn out the bores are oval + tapered too.
A new set of Hypatecs pistons and rings is only around $200 including post from Minis Plus, or Minisport SA.
A new set of rings alone for your old pistons can cost 1/2 this, or more.

I'm asking these questions to get a headrest so I don't waste engine builders' time. That and all my literature is on a boat from the US!

Crack test the crank first,
Regrind it if needed (if it's an S EN40B nitrided one, maybe it won't- mine has been in 5 engines now and is still at -.010/-.010),
Balance it,
Check conrods for straightness,
Replace rod bolts and nuts with ARP ones, then resize rod bores if needed.
Check main bearing bores for size.

When fitting new rod bolts it's a good idea to have the big end bores checked for size and ovality. Because, on all 1275 rods the bolts align the caps, nothing else does. :wink:
If they need it, the engine shop will `shut and hone' them (they remove a little metal from the cap and rod, bolt them up then resize the bore on a special machine).
However I find doing this is the exception not the rule, however they do need to be checked.

For someone more local try Ken Nelson at mini automotive in Ipswich. He is more than up to the task of building a good motor, and wont take advantage of your lack of knowledge.
