The finish You get when You re chrome an 850 grille, largley depends on how rusty it is on the internal part of the grille slats, As this is A low current density area and less Copper If used, Nickle and Chrome would have been deposited there when First Plated. To metal polish the Grille in this area properly it is very labour intensive, It May be possible to Get a fairly good Job if your plater has one of the new acid copper solutions that has a levelling effect when plating on iregular surfaces, |

How does powder coating fit in here given that there is an amazing array of tones and colours that includes golds and silvers and I suspect chromes. ????? Mike |

????? Mike Most powder coating has pretty poor UV resistance, you should see the expensive red `White' brand toolbox in my garage. Where the afternoon sun hits it for 2 hours, it's flat and dull as a pancake. ![]() Also if moisture gets under it along an edge as it's in the weather, bye bye coating.. the rust just flicks it off. Outdoors, I'd trust 2 pack paint well before powder coating. |

Didn't even think of two pack paint ???? How would it come up as against chrome plating - it is chrome colour we are talking about. ???? |

I doubt normal two pack would be bright enough, but look into the new spray chrome paints that are available. They may be more suitable than plating when the substrate isn't perfect and the shine compares fairly well with chrome. They need to be clear coated to make them last. Here's a couple to give you the idea http://www.coloursmart.net.au/3.html http://sprayonchrometech.com/home.html Tim |

Yes - thats wy we are discussing options - I knew that was going to be about the money and as the Doc said, chromeplating has risks. |

Very early (1st batch of) 850s sold here in 1961 had painted grilles, but from then on they were all chromed. I have a chromed one here, it's not bad looking from outside but on the inside the chrome is lifting away in places.. ![]() I'd get it rechromed, but not for the silly money they now ask for. |

I want to get mine done too but I was going to look into spray painting the chrome on instead of getting it professionally done. |
