Post subject: | Dude, Where's my gearbox? |
I've just arrived at work after a half hour drive. I thought I'd bring the mini for once. Now, about 100 meters before I got to work, in a downchange from 4 to 3rd gear, I discovered that I couldn't find 3rd. OK. I'll try 2nd. Nope, not there either. I pulled over, found 1st again, and continued up the road as normal. When It came to parking my car, I noticed I now can't find ANY gear with the engine running. With the engine off there is no problem, but while it is on, there are no gears to be found. It happened with 3rd last week on the mini golf cruise, but only once with that one gear. What the heck is going on? |

Um, I had something similar with my camry once basicly the clutch didn't work cause a bit of metal had broken of the clutch plate somehow and got caught between that and the flywheel at least I think that was what had happened. ![]() doing a clutch on a camry is a PITA ![]() So is the clutch still working? if it is maybe it is something to do with syncomesh but you wouldn't expect them to go all at once would you? Is your clutch properly adjusted ? Just random thoughts.... |

I'm using GTX 2 20W-50 oil in the car. I just tried it again, same problem. The clutch pedal feels different to normal, it feels lighter. Maybe it's low on fluid? The fluid in the reservior is about 20-25mm from the top of the cap. Is brake fluid and clutch fluid the same stuff? It makes sense to me. |

feels lighter? could be collapsed pressure plate. Does the slave cylinder move when depressing the clutch pedal? |

Yeah, check your hydraulics, get somebody to push on the clutch, and have a look to see if the clutch arm is actually being pushed far enough to engage the clutch. Also, maybe pull the clutch arm out and check for wear on the ball at the end and also check the plunger - I had one wear so badly I could hardly select gears. However, if this happened suddenly, and you can't seem to change gears at all on the move, I would suspect a hydraulic problem or maybe a diaphragm problem - if it has a weak diaphragm (brown dot ones etc), then it might have given up on you, they like to shear the rivets ![]() <edit>Oh, and it isn't making any funny noises from the clutch bearing is it? I had one disintegrate suddenly, and I got the same problem as you. Drove it home in second. When you started the car in gear (since you couldn't select gear with the engine running) it would roll forward. Barely any clutch at all! |

If it helps, the car won't start in gear. So the clutch is definetly holding on. I'll play around later. I asked one of the car nuts here what he knows about them, he said probably a master cylinder, so just drive it home in 3rd. I'm thinking, that might work on a commodore, but I'm not going to attempt it for the 20K trip home along the way I'd go. Thanks guys, I'll see what I can find. |

Won't start in gear? As in wont crank over at all? With mine I had to start in second, with the handbrake off and let the move with the starter motor, then I drove all the way home without stopping! But that was with partial (very) clutch, but it was just enough. If you have no clutch at all, then I'd suggest you walk home. ![]() |

Out of gear= car will start. In gear= car tries to start, but doesn't. My parking space at work isn't of much help either. |

I topped up the clutch fluid, and the car is drivable again- just. The car will start in gear now, but the clutch is engaged about 1cm off full press, causing the car to run a bit jittery. I'll look at bleeding the system later, or get new cylinders if it comes to that. |

For sure give it a bleed if it ran out/low on fluid that shoud have ya drama solved! Watch the brake fluid on the paint, its corrosive, douse the area with water after your finished. |
