You need to check that you are on top dead centre , compresion stroke not exhaust, take the rocker cover off and wind the motor over by hand to make sure , watch the rockers on number one. once you are on compresion stroke . take the distributor cap off and see were the rotor button is pointing,
this will be your starting point for number 1

im sure ive got it one the compression stroke the rotor button is pointing straight up at number 4 cylinder. I ve put the leads on in the order of 1342 in an anticlockwise direction from the rotor button

Turn the dizzy body clockwise a bit to advance it, most motors like static timing at around 10° BTDC.

Double check again the rockers are both loose on #4 when the rotor is pointing there.

ALL the workshop manuals for the last 50 years are WRONG in that they show one pic of the cam timing marks lined up dot to dot (= firing on #4 but they don't say this), then there's another pic showing the dizzy driveshaft in the right position for firing on #1.
They neglect to tell you that you have to turn the motor 1 TURN before fitting the dizzy driveshaft, to have this happen.

Get No 1 at TDC on the compression stroke (remove No 1 plug , stick thumb in hole and feel for pressure).

Attach No 1 plug lead to the terminal that the rotor is pointing at. Count off the other plug leads from there.

Cheers, Ian
