I believe there is an oil by pass in the mini housing so you would need to select a kit with this provision or a filter that has a by pass that works on the same angle you wish to mount it at and of course the operating pressure.

If its a race engine with oil changes every race you could ignore this.

Or you could just change your oil and filter more frequently

That filter bypass is just asking for crud to be send straight into the bearings as the filter gets dirty. Once the filter is too dirty and the bypass opens, all the unfiltered dirty oil is pumped straight into the bearings. Not the brightest of ideas by the BMC engineers.

People who own these cars today and don't maintain them in such a way as to want the lazy mans filter bypass don't deserve them IMHO.

cheers

Move the filter and have it suit a Z9. Cheapest and most readily available filter and it's huge. That's what my father has done with his Austin's, which use an almost I obtainable filter. Z9 falcon filter.

Id rather dirty oil than no oil. But maybe that's just me.
Quite a bit of oil goes through the by pass, iirc its not spring tensioned so its pen at any pressure. A bit of dirty oil isn't going to do anything many old engines ran with no oil filter.
I don't want to start this again but I have opinions on quality over quantity of oil changes.

Kirby,
The bypass ball (valve) does have a spring, take a filter off and poke up at it..
Racers in UK suggest you should weld the ball onto its seat, or fit a plug instead.
I've never done this or ever had a problem, however I do change the oil every 1500 miles and the filter every 3000, religiously.
And my filter can has two 25mm dia x 10mm rare earth magnets clinging onto it, these grab lots of fines in there that would otherwise go through the filter paper, and around.. and around.. etc.

BTW these (and most other) filter mounts WILL work in any position, upside down even- because the bypass ball is spring loaded against its seat..

Mini Deluxes (with the cartridge filter element) had a switch on this valve and a light in the speedo so you could see if/when it was open. From my memory this only happened if you left the filter in there way past its use-by time.

I had the filter light come on when the oil was suddenly over cooled after being very hot. (drove into a hailstorm after climbing Mt Vic pass) Cold thick oil won't go though a hot filter!

I used to have similar problems with a truck that was fitted with a filter light years ago. On real cold mornings the oil wouldn't go though the filter quick enough. You had to drive it by the filter light for about half an hour!

I like the idea of a filter light. If the filter is being bypassed it might be handy to actually know about it!

If you decided to block it off, in cold weather I think you could damage some of the el-cheapo filters being sold now.

I currently use Wix ones, they are a US company but their Mini spin-on filters are made in Poland.
Some others are particularly bad- google oil filter problems for examples (I won't name them here).

Doc is it the WIX 51348?

that's the match I get on their website - one hell of an application listing..

If a mini filter is good enough for a Mack truck or a JCB loader.. good enough for me!

(I wonder if Mokesta ever knew his MX5 and mini took the same filter..)

WIX WL7098.
It's in their Euro catalog.
I get them from Karcraft, ! buy 12 at a time (cheaper by the doz).

BTW a Mini spin-on filter is the same as a 350 Chev. And Toyota, and lots of others.

Including my Rover Ranger ride-on lawn mower. . . :D
But then I guess that's not suprising - it is a Rover after all

Kits like this:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OIL-FILTER-RELOCATION-KIT-CONNECT-OIL-COOLER-GAUGES-/120710809038?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c1aecc5ce

... simply bolt on in place of the orginal filter. I have no idea whether this is a good one or even the correct thread.

The same filters as fit Minis also fit 3SGTE, 4AGE and 18RG Toyota engines. So the kits with the right thread for those engines should work on a Mini.

Cheers,
