Cooper S Heater Hose.. BRASS?

Post subject:  Cooper S Heater Hose.. BRASS?
Going through my brochures and have picked up on something.... The heater hose looks like a brass pipe.. Is it under pressure?? it doesn't like it is....

You have to remember that the brochures are printed before the first car goes on sale. They often change little things after the brochures are printed.

The Morris 1100 has a brass pipe running across behind the rocker cover. I wonder if they tried similar on the Cooper S but dropped it for some reason? (probably because brass pipes don't like vibration and rubber hose is cheaper by the foot)

I think you will find some of the photos you will see in early brochures and magazines tests don't always represent the final production model.

Another thing you will notice is there no oil cooler fitted and engine venting via rocker cover.

If you have a copy of wheels Aug 65, the one with the air-bourne Cooper S on the cover, I would say it is the same white car used in the brochure as in the Wheels mag. Looks to be same engine bay too.

The caption in wheels notes "...this was the prototype, with extra plumbing"

I remember Dad occasionally bringing home handbuilt preproduction cars. Usually just a case of fiddling and deciding on minor changes before full production.

Vividly remember our whole family pileing into a prototype poo brown P76 for a ride around the block.

Its listed in Original MINI COOPER AND COOPER S book, after some looking, and Jon mentions that it is correct.. and on my Cooper S manifold there is a loop about the right size for a copper pipe!

If you mean John Parnells book you need to bear in mind that it is concerning English built cars. The engineering dept in Australia made minor changes for the Australian model.

Yeah I always like going thru the old mags but it is a bit tricky. I would say often the cars they handed over for road tests and articles ect were often very early cars. You'll see the same cars popping up in different magazines.

There's a dark coloured cooper s rego DXK 552 that appears in different magazines road tests that's probably a better example of a typical Australian production line build.

That white car is a 65 Cooper S. Quite a bit different to your car Brett.
I have those pics at home of a 67 engine bay. Just in a bit of a mess with the house renovation. Give me a couple of weeks and will post them up.

The heater tap on your car should be more like the one on the 65 car than the ranco one, and should not have the copper hose. The ranco heater tap wasnt used until much later, definitely by 69 but may be as early as late 68. Also the radiator hose clamps were wire not flat steel for your car.

Thanks guys... I have managed to get posted to me a full Cooper S road test...from 67 same age as my car. I will scan it, and upload it to the mini brochure section :D

Thanks Greg.. The Radiator Clamps are wire, so at least something is right!.. Just ordered some little single wire clamps for the fuel stuff.... Can't wait to get the mag that I will upload for every one to get a benefit out of it!
