It depends on the condition of the 1275 and what's been done to it, anywhere from $500 - $5000 , don't forget you also need front Disc brakes to fit a 1275.

You can always expand onna standard 1275, but you will reach a performance ceiling with an 1100.

But the simplicity of a 1100 is pretty hard to go past, or the song of a high revving 998....

If the bottom end of your 998 is still strong (not worn), then go a bit further with mods on your current engine.

Modify a 12G202 head (off an 1100). Big valves, ported, shaved, the usual. The 12G202 are a good easy head to find and aren't expensive. You may even have one on ya current engine.

Hot camshaft. Something along the lines of an RE13 would go great in a 998 with a hot head and the right carby and exhaust setup.

1.75" SU.

That would give more life to your 998, and I recon would beat any standard 1275. 8)

Keep the 998, they're bulletproof. AND you've already got one..and
they're a much sweeter engine than the 1100...

yeah if you've got extractors and zorst, work the head.. should cost about 500-600 bucks or sommit.
You'll get a big chunk of power there..
go the 202 head like poeee said.

make sure you have at least a 1& 1/2 inch su.

at the same time, put a fast road cam in there to liven things up

you might get around 60hp
and she'll pull real hard.

a stocko 1275 in decent nick will cost you say 2000 bucks or so and to be legal require disk brakes.
And dont forget that everything for 1275's will cost more.

if you want to turbo/supercharge, you really need an engine thats fresh, and preferably built to take it..

I've had 850-998-1098-1220-1275-1310 & 1360.
No substitute for cubic inches, if you want performance.

I'd find a 1275 in bits, cheap, and do it up. Yeah, there are still a few about, keep your eyes open. I bought a crank here, a head there, etc.
My 1360 in the car now only cost me $1300 for a full reco, including rebore, crank grind, RE-13 cam & followers, bearings, pistons, etc etc.
Not including gearbox- I did that last year.
OK, so I put it all together which saved me a bundle. But it's pretty cheap. See how far $1300 goes on a ricer.... :?

$1300 will get you some neons YEAH!
or a JUN BL..
ooh ooh.. scissor doors!!

i cant even get my hands on a decent smallbore engine for cheap these days.. $750 for one thats been rebuilt a few years ago i was looking at..
i ended up buying a modified one for $1000, but the gearbox is pretty average. And thats like $1200-1500 to get it rebuilt.

you are looking at $2000 for a good 1275 not including removal of your smallbore and installation of the new donk..
that is unless you know someone...
you could probably get a very second hand one for 500, but its only useful as a paperweight unless you're a mechanic or sommit, because it will cost you 2-3 grand to get someone to rebuild it all..

I recently sold a 1275 for $500.... totally virgin....

They are still out there.... just gotta go scrounging......

Pesonally, I'd stick to the 998 or 1100.... its just so rewarding to kick these big-block boys arses at the Dyno days....ok, so I'm blown, but hey... its not THAT wild........

Good luck.
