You know, I reckon it was factory built like that.
I read somewhere that these vans were assembled in NZ from CKD kits.
What if, in 1971 NZ regulations mandated burst proof door hinges? What if, instead of using UK wind-up window doors they wanted to keep the external hinges? The easy option would have been to use a mix of UK van and estate panels, with Australian doors and B pillars. It was being done here, so we know its possible.
Or it could just be a home made job where someone has gone to an immense amount of trouble to put wind up windows on their van.

I am not sure what this is ,Just going by the photos, however if it was CKD from Australia then all the panels I think would be 1971 Australian type,
If it was CKD from Uk then one would think that all panels would be UK
However, it is possible that this was built in NZ using a combination of SKD Packs from the UK And Aust
As You say They may have had to have burst proof door catches which the Aust ones
had from 1971 so They may have used The Aust Side panels as these were pressed in
one panel from the rear to the hinge panel, This said I think the UK had burst proof door catches in 1971
As You say Very interesting
