hey all trying to get to the end of the wiring gremlins in my moke..
do any of you recognise what these wires are meant for or what they supposed to do..

hey all trying to get to the end of the wiring gremlins in my moke.. do any of you recognise what these wires are meant for or what they supposed to do..

Looking through the wiring diagram it looks like that orange wire isn't supposed to be there at all. From the fuse box you should have 1 white and 1 brown from the ignition barrel and starter solenoid, all the outputs (there should be 4) are green. Since that orange line runs from the fuse box to the headlight area, I'd guess it was for driving lights at some stage. Not sure about those plugs. |

That wiring harness has had more hits than Elvis Presley. There are wired there that have been added on so any replies you get from any one will be a very wild guess. I suggest you get someone who knows Minis and MOKES to have a look at it. |

hmm yeah ok.. thanks for the guesses. and finding someone in the know up in darwin isnt exactly an option.. i might just fork the $350 and grab a replacement loom from minisport - http://www.minisport.com.au/prod1728.htm |

That replacement loom is a bad copy of the 1981 loom, with wrong plugs and an inscrutable diagram. A couple of online suppliers stock it and flog it as superior because it is 'brand new', but it's not much chop. Better off spending the extra to get a loom from Vinwire, also brand new but has added bonus of being correct. |

Is there anything not working? Do you have a working horn? Washer Bottle? When you pull it straight is there enough length for it to get to anything likely? It does look like an added extra. Does it come from the fuse box and go nowhere or does it disappear into the loom? The only other thing to try is to trace it back or just go for the old “tape and tuck” approach,

Looking at your engine bay in your Members Gallery thread, it looks like either driving lights or an alarm. I have an alarm on my Moke which runs an orange wire to the indicators for flashy flashy, noisy noisy action. If everything works, rip it out. But if you're putting a Sirion engine in then it doesn't matter because you'll have to put at least half a new loom in anyway. |

the park lights, driving lights, front and rear indicators, and rear stop lights arnt working, the horn doesnt work, the squirters dont work either.. however the engine starts and the thermo fan works, as does the windscreen wipers,
the tape and tuck idea seems to be the go, as i want to get it registered with this engine.. ill buy a new loom unless the loom coming with the sirion engine is complete.. |

Wuss. Yeah, I dunno. That loom looks pretty ratshit. Mine looks worse, but at least everything works. If I had that many faults with a loom that dodgy I wouldn't bother repairing, I'd replace. |

You need to know what you are doing to install a new loom too. They do not self install. I do this for a living every day of the week. |

Lucas wiring looms are simple and anyone with a basic wiring colour code chart can work with one. Lucas was the biggest electricial supplier in the UK so they kept it simple, you will find that it be a mini/triumph/jag/morris minor the wiring colour code will be the same. I have made and fitted hundreds of looms over the years, for all british built cars and its bloody simple, so dont be be scared to fix your loom, it looks as the PO has had no idea what they were doing so sit down with a diagram (that you can get easy on the internet) and remove all the crap that doesnt belong there, repair the proper wiring and suddenly everything will work again. just noticed the helpful info in this thread, im starting to have a few wiring issues my self (dont think any of the wiring in mine is original so cant really work out whats what haha), might just rip the whole loom out and run a new one, sounds and looks like it will be pretty straight forward |
