Post subject:  1963 Cooper Interior question???

Does anyone know or know where to look to find out the original carpet colour for a 1963 Cooper Nurberg White Roof over Slate grey. The car still has the original tarten red seats.panels etc but it looks as though the carpets have been replace in grey.

I guess my question is should they be grey or tarten red the same as the seats etc??

Thanks PT

Send a PM to Graham in aus, he has a couple of early Coopers. Being an ex-Pom he's been around Coopers etc for a long time, and would probably know..

edit> my guess would be red carpets...

according to Parnell's "Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S", the closest listed is Smoke Grey (BU 15) and OE white roof (WT 3), seats were Dove Grey with Dark Grey, Liners were Dove Grey and The carpets were either Grey or Cumulus Grey

the other Grey with OE White roof is Tweed Grey (GR 4), with the same seats/inserts, and Cumulus grey carpet

this book is only about the english cars, though I think all Cooper (non-S) were imported weren't they?

They were assembled here I think, the shells have Oz style drain holes in the roof gutters.
Cooper 997 motors & gearboxes were imported. Trim may have been imported too.

My 1963 997 had drilled holes.

Looking at Parnell's book, that colour Smoke Grey is almost identical to the Shadow Blue colour used over here.

I miss my 997, should never have sold it... :(

Mmmm.. shadow blue is really quite blue! My mate has a Morris 850 and an Austin 1800 Mk1 in shadow blue and they arent that much like the smoke?/slate grey in the 'flesh'.

Yeah, must be the way it came out in print, or a mistake (though I doubt it) if you lay your hands on the book, you'll see what I mean.

The most reasonable explanation is the printing colur changed the actual shade.

Now I am confused!!! The 1963 colours listed for the Leyland Motor Company in 1963 included Slate (Storm) Grey no. 06175 Norburg White no. 05269. Slate grey was only used by the look of the paint listings in 63 and 64. The poms obviously loved grey because Smoke grey , ash grey, astro grey, cumulus grey, english grey, grampian grey and stradbroke grey were also listed in 1963!!! I don't know whether they were all used for minis.

I don't know about importing etc but mine does have the drain holes in the roof etc.

Anyway I think I like the red better than the grey any how?

if you're looking at the shot of the fuel tank cap on P38, then I agree, my van was shadow blue, and there is some original paint under the head lining, it does look quite similar

but this doesn't help you much PT, does it!

the only ones with red carpet in parnell's book had red seats, and vice versa - the only ones with red seats had red carpet.... so I reckon you're safest with red carpet, either Tartan Red or Cherokee Red were on the pommy cars, to go with Tartan red/gold brocade grey seats

Australian Cooper 997 and 998's never had the gold brocade seats I believe, although they are pretty flash to look at.

I have seen one or two personal imports though which do.

Those newton carpets look top.
I would like to get a set of those.
The price looks ok but there in the UK
Does anyone supply them here by any chance?
I could get them when im over there in sept but may be a bit hard luggage wise.
Any help?
I have been hearing some silly prices people want in oz and a proper fitted carpet would be nice.

My grey Austin Super Deluxe has red seats and red carpet. Carpet should be westminster but Newton commercial carpet and cream crackle headlinning arrived in the post yesterday here is a before shot and I will post pics of after. I have used Newton commercial before and will use again to finish my 1960 woody traveller. Great service and good product.

I have also just had a great Sydney trimmer measure up my mini K panel van and will show the results in the next couple of weeks.
